?In a lot of ways, we?re not the typical family.? There are nine of us, and we?re very close. We?re loud and boisterous and always on the go. Lots of kids, lots of animals, lots of activity.? Scott smiled. ?It?s always like that. And that is what my Dad is used to.?
In the course of a year, Scott?s father, Scott Sr., had a stroke and a major heart attack.? ?This took a lot out of Dad.? He?s still very sharp mentally. He?s very alert and aware of what?s going on around him.? But he can?t take care of things around the house. He wasn?t eating, unless one of us went over there and made him eat.?
The family hired a woman who claimed to have extensive experience caring for the elderly. ?She was very controlling,? Scott said. ?She tried to set up visiting hours ? in my Dad?s own home! If we stopped by to see him after dinner, she told us he was already in bed.? My father has never gone to bed at 6:30 in the evening in his life! We weren?t supposed to bring the kids over, we weren?t supposed to bring the dogs over: it was all too upsetting for Dad.? Scott shook his head. ?It was too upsetting for her, that?s what the story was.? After we let that woman go, the very first thing Dad wanted was to see Marie, my youngest daughter.?
Hiring The Right Caregiver: Ask Lots of Questions
Scott knew that his father still needed in home caregiving.? This time, he was determined to find a caregiver who was a better fit for the whole family. ?Instead of trying to find a person on my own, I found a caregiving agency. It was important to me to find a caregiver who was interested in who my Dad was as a person, and what was important to him.?
Scott recommends asking lots of questions. ?We had a family meeting, and made a list of all of our concerns. We wanted to know that Dad?s at home caregiver could provide all of the assistance needed on a daily basis, while understanding that it?s family connections that keep Dad going.? We don?t want him isolated and alone ? that makes him depressed.?
