California state lawmakers passed House Resolution No. 30, a measure recognizing International Surfing Day as a day to celebrate California's surfing heritage and raise awareness about protecting the oceans, waves and beaches of the Golden State.
California Assemblyman Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara), a lifelong California surfer, introduced the measure before lawmakers in Sacramento.
The resolution justified the annual holiday based on the California's $43 billion ocean economy, the surf industry and world-famous surfing spots like Rincon, Mavericks and Trestles.
International Surfing Day is a worldwide celebration of the sport of surfing founded in 2005 by Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine.More than 200 events in 30 nations are held on International Surfing Day, with the annual celebration now officially recognized at the California State Capitol in Sacramento.
Finally, the Golden State can now "hang ten" legally, thanks to California lawmakers.
