With the upcoming general elections looming, most political parties have taken to social networking websites to not just disperse information and connect with the citizens, but also to remain relevant and try and reach out to the youth of India. There are some, however, who do not see the point of this exercise.
Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar has slammed the presence of politicians on Twitter like BJP chief Narendra Modi and former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, saying that they were turning the ?sweet chirping of birds into the jarring sound of politics?.
Birds okay, not Politicians
?
To take a dig at the political class on the micro-blogging website, he pulled out the literal meaning of the word ?Twitter?, which refers to the chirping of birds. "The dictionary meaning of twitter is the chirping of birds which makes a man happy hearing them in the morning," Kumar explained to the media, emerging from his ?Janata ke Darbar mein Mukhya Mantri? programme. "But some leaders through excessive tweeting have turned it into a jarring sound."
Incidentally, Kumar ended a long coalition with Modi?s party, the BJP, after 17 long years in June. While he did not name any politicians while ranting about their use of Twitter, he made plenty of references to the top echelons of the Indian political system currently on Twitter. ?They seem to have no other work in a day than to make political statements for the media. Twitter serves actors who can't access their fans. Politicians should be able to connect with the people every day,? he said. He also made references to certain former BJP ministers whose tweets and abusive languages showed that they had no ?hope of getting their job back (sic)?.
It?s interesting to see polarised reactions to social networking websites as a tool before the upcoming general elections. While the likes of Narendra Modi, Sushma Swaraj, Digvijay Singh and others have embraced Twitter in order to connect with their voter base, some like Nitish Kumar are openly pooh-poohing the prospect of going online and connecting with citizens.
