Infertile woman gives birth after boost to ovaries

A baby boy has been born following a new fertility treatment that awakens dormant eggs in women who have stopped menstruating.

The treatment could help women who have left child-bearing too late, or have been left infertile after treatment for cancer. But some have raised concerns that the technique has been rushed to the clinic before being properly tested.

Women are born with millions of immature eggs, or follicles, but only around 400 mature to the point where an egg is released into the fallopian tubes and could be fertilised. But some of these follicles remain, even after a woman has stopped menstruating.

Now researchers have found a way to wake these dormant follicles and produce eggs that are capable of being fertilised. The first test of this technique has resulted in a baby boy, born in December 2012 in Japan.

Chop and change

Immature follicles are usually kept in a dormant state by the PTEN gene, which suppresses a signalling pathway involved in cell growth. Aaron Hsueh at Stanford University Medical School in California and his colleagues had previously showed that immature mouse follicles could be stimulated to mature if pieces of ovary were incubated with a molecule that stimulates the signalling pathway that PTEN inhibits.

Hsueh's team also discovered that the physical act of cutting up the ovaries disrupts a second signalling pathway, called the Hippo pathway, which normally suppresses the growth of many of the body's other organs as well.

When the cut up and incubated tissue was implanted back into the mice, eggs were released and fertilised, resulting in the birth of live pups.

Now the team has used a similar process to give women with premature menopause a shot at being mothers, using their own eggs.

Follicle growth

Twenty-seven women who had been diagnosed with premature menopause volunteered to have their ovaries removed. Of these, only 13 had any residual follicles left. These women had their ovaries diced up and incubated with a PTEN inhibitor, before pieces were transplanted into their fallopian tubes. Ultrasound was used to monitor follicle growth.

In all, eight of the women produced mature follicles, and were given drugs to trigger the release of an egg. Five of them produced mature eggs which were harvested and fertilised by IVF. So far, three have had their embryos implanted, resulting in one birth and one on-going pregnancy. The third failed to implant.

Ultimately, Hsueh says the technique could be used to help women who have stopped menstruating, and may not be responding to conventional treatment. "This data shows that there are small follicles still sitting there after women have stopped menstruating. This is a way that you can get them to work."

However, Evelyn Telfer, a fertility researcher at the University of Edinburgh, UK, says much more work is needed to ensure the technique is safe before it is routinely used in the clinic. "It's an interesting first step, but we need to do many controlled studies ? without implanting the embryos ? to show that at each stage of the procedure these eggs are normal," she says. "People say it's a baby at all costs, but if the baby is compromised in any way then that's a problem."

It's also not clear whether the women would have produced mature follicles, and ultimately eggs, if their ovaries had been diced up and re-implanted without exposing them to a PTEN inhibitor.

A Perfectly Good Writing Day in L.A. - Storyfix.com

Welcome to West Hollywood. ?I don?t live here, nor am I here to meet with a movie producer about one of my books. ?I am, however, sitting in a mall across the street from the monolithic building where that stuff happens, where the agents are, and so I bask in the glorious reflected radiance of their demographic wisdom.

Somewhere in the building, I?d wager, is at least one of the 46 agents who rejected ?The Help? before it raised the bar on modern historicals.

It?s gorgeous here. ?It?s about 8 in the morning, warm and sunny, and other than a Coffee Bean and a hungover hipster sleeping next to a fountain, the place is deserted. ?I?m in town to speak at the Writers Digest West Coast Writers Conference, a presentation I wandered over here from the hotel to actually write. ?Nothing like the scent of tacos and piped-in new age music to stoke the creative fires.

Instead I find myself writing this post. ?Gotta work on my time management.

The title of my presentation: Storytelling Excellence Through the Avoidance of Mediocrity.

I have 50 minutes to change the lives of 400 writers who have been wondering about this. A bit like getting one hour to deliver a moral compass to the population of a work-release facility.

The time constraint forces me toward theory, I fear, because those 12 buckets I teach from ? the six core competencies and the six realms of story physics ? barely fit into the UCLA student library, which is just up the street.

Square One, I think, connects to how one defines ?excellence? and ?mediocrity.? ?These are relative terms, but they become less so when one admits they are in this for the money. ?Okay, and of course the obligatory nod to art and redemption. ?Wrapping one?s head around the difference is the first order of business. ?If you raise your hand, you no longer are writing simply for yourself.

The moment one aspires to be a professional, everything changes. ?One is suddenly forced to look mediocrity sqaurely in the eye? and then spit in it.

The discussion, I believe, quickly gravitates toward two levels: the Big Picture of a story, and the Execution of a story. ?The former resides at the 3-way intersection of Idea, Concept and Premise. ?And the latter ? Execution ? kicks in when you step off that curb.

The premise of a story can lean into excellence by it?s obvious potential for dramatic and thematic chops (again, ?The Help? comes to mind) and when it isn?t ? about 8 out of 10 of the stories sent to me for evaluation ? the writer is left to, if you will, make that steaming pile of story into chicken salad. ?Somehow.

Mediocrity happens when writers settle. ?When they grab the first hint of a story beat and move forward with it without vetting better options. ?When they make it all up as they go and then stamp ?The End? on the last page, without introducing the first quartile to the last.

Mediocrity is when you resolve your thriller or mystery with a fist fight that the hero wins.

Mediocrity is when your historical takes your hero on a tour of the land, falls in love, fights a battle (a dragon, perhaps) and lives happily ever after.

Mediocrity happens when your romance ?shows a good girl pining for a bad guy, and she gets a chance to change him, because hey, that?s the power of love.

Medicrity happens when in your heart your goal is to allow your writing, your voice, to carry the day because the story is about ?real life.?

Mediocrity is episodic. ?Mediocrity depicts characters swapping chit-chat over coffee.

Mediocrity is a story about something, without nothing much happening.

You can do everything precisely right, structurally-speaking, and it still might end up in a stack labeled mediocre.

Excellence happens when story physics drive your creative decision-making.

Another reason today is a Perfectly Good Writing Day

At least for me: Amazon is now shipping my new novel, Deadly Faux, a week before the scheduled pub date. ?It?s live, in both trade paperback and Kindle (the Kindle link doesn?t show yet on the main book page, but use the Kindle search and it?s there). ?Bookstores should have it in a week or three.

Of course, it is on this day when we writers dust off our holiday card list and roam through parking lots putting promotional postcards under windshield wipers? but I?m too old, cynical and been-there-tried-that to go that route? again. ?Doesn?t work, by the way.

Instead, I?m going to try something that, to my knowledge, has never been done before. ?

I?m going to write an ebook that does two things: it will deconstruct Deadly Faux in detail, turning it into a laboratory for writers looking for transparency into issues such as structure, context, story physics and the optimization of story. ?I?ll use pages numbers and describe narrative strategy, story beat by story beat.

In other words, putting my head on my own chopping block to walk the Storyfix talk. ?And hopefully, showcase and discuss these storytelling principles for the benefit to others.

It?ll be line one massive Storyfix post.

The ebook will also be a short ?making of? story of the creation and selling of the novel itself, which is a thriller in its own right. ?If you want to see what this business looks like from behind the curtain, and how it feels to get lifted up, smacked down and then resuccciated (the book has had three agents behind it, for starters), if you want to avoid mistakes and see what works, and why? then this ebook will deliver.

The ebook: ?The Inner Life of Deadly Faux? will be free to Storyfix readers who pick up a copy of the novel.? Just send me your online receipt, or if you bought it old school (as in, at a bookstore), just tell me where that happened and what store. ?I?ll send the ebook back to you digitally.

For now this is the only way to get your hands on it, and I hope you?ll agree it?s a win-win (because it?s free, and it?s really not relevant until you have Deadly Faux anyhow). ?This offer begins immediately? the ebook is being completed and I?ll ship it out to you in a few weeks. ?Time enough to get the novel read.

This has never been done before, in this form. ?It forwards my goals on several levels, and being a big believer in the win-win, it is designed to forward yours, as well. ?I invite you to go to the Amazon page and read the author blurbs about the novel? if you aren?t buying my hype, I hope you?ll believe what two big name authors are saying about it.

Thanks for helping me write my presentation, and for considering Deadly Faux and the free ebook.

Militants Kill Students In Dorms At Nigerian College

As many as 50 students may be dead in Nigeria, after gunmen attacked an agricultural college's dormitories in the country's northeast. The attack, which occurred as many students slept, is being blamed on the group Boko Haram, which wants to form an Islamic state.

From The Associated Press:

"As many as 50 students may have been killed in the assault that began at about 1 a.m. Sunday in rural Gujba, Provost Molima Idi Mato of Yobe State College of Agriculture, told The Associated Press."

" 'They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels, they opened fire at them,' he said.

"He said he could not give an exact death toll as security forces still are recovering bodies of students mostly aged between 18 and 22."

The school's surviving students have fled, a witness tells the AP.

The Boko Haram group often targets schools ? its name is translated as "Western education is forbidden." A government push against the group met with some success earlier this year, but in the months since, the group has carried out violent attacks in response.

A state of emergency that was declared in May persists in northeastern Nigeria.

Zac Rinaldo ejected for elbow on Mikhail Grabovski ... - Yahoo Sports

Zac Rinaldo of the Philadelphia Flyers greeted his new division rivals, the Washington Capitals, with his unique brand of whimsy on Friday night, earning a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for this elbowing penalty on Mikhail Grabovski in a preseason affair:

As Grabovski told Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington:

?Was that Chara? No, not Chara. Not a smart play. That's not the first time. It was hard hit but I'm OK.?

So what to make of this hit? Grabovski is crouching down after nudging the puck along. Even on the reverse angle, it?s hard to see exactly where Rinaldo?s elbow landed.

Since there?s no injury on the play, one wonders if anything further comes down on Rinaldo. But his actions were worthy enough for a game misconduct.

Rinaldo's got a rap sheet with the NHL, having been suspended in Feb. 2012 for charging Jonathan Ericsson, as well as getting a pair of fines in that same season.

What say you?

UPDATE: Brendan Shanahan has Tweeted his reasoning why Rinaldo will not receive any punishment:

Mexico to Chair the Working Group to Discuss the Strategic Vision of the OAS

Press Release

Mexico to Chair the Working Group to Discuss the Strategic Vision of the OAS

??September 20, 2013

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today established the Working Group that will lead discussions on the Strategic Vision of the OAS and elected the Permanent Representative of Mexico, Emilio Rabasa Gamboa, as Chair and the Permanent Representative of Barbados, John Beale, as Vice Chair, during a regular meeting at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.

The Chair of the Council and Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the OAS, Martin Sannemann, said the group "will be responsible for developing the political dialogue about the proposal presented by the Secretary General", Jos? Miguel Insulza, in April. The dialogue "will aim to determine the best ways to achieve the purposes for which the OAS was created" and "the definitive prioritization of the mandates of the Organization," said Ambassador Sannemann.

The Council also received a report on the recent activities of the Secretary General away from headquarters, which included his attendance at the inauguration of the new President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes; a meeting of the United Nations Development Programme on the Human Development Report; a visit to Uruguay to present the Report on the Drug Problem in the Americas (Analytical Report and Scenarios Report) to President Jose Muj?ca; his participation in a conference at Chatham House in London on the subject; his address to the High Level Advisory Committee convened by the President of the UN General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic, on sustainable development; his participation in a seminar in Rome on the 40th anniversary of the coup d??tat in Chile, at the invitation of two European foundations- Italianaeuropei and Enrico Berlinguer-; and his meetings with the President of Italy, Giogio Napolitano, Foreign Minister Emma Bonino; and Pope Francis, who received him in his private office at the Vatican.

Council Members welcomed the new Permanent Representative of Argentina to the OAS, Nilda Garr?, who presented her credentials to the Secretary General earlier this week. The former Minister of Public Security of Argentina said in her first address to the Council, "the Organization of American States has a favorable platform, an appropriate one, to renew in a sustained and permanent way the commitment of my country, Argentina, to the shared interests that made possible the creation of this Organization, interests that were built on the basis of a strong belief in the virtues of peace, security, democracy, human rights and integral development. That is, values ??and interests that were built on very solid pillars, which remain today those that sustain this institution."

On another agenda item, Council members commemorated the International Day of Democracy, which took place on September 15. In their comments, the representatives praised various elements of the democratic system and highlighted the benefits democracy brings to society. They reflected on the concepts of free elections, respect for human and minority rights, transparency in public management, non-discrimination, freedom of expression and gender equality.

During the meeting, the representatives offered their condolences to Mexico over the devastation caused by Hurricane Ingrid and Tropical Storm Manuel, and to the United States over the deaths at the headquarters of the Navy Yard in Washington this week, and due to the flooding in Boulder, Colorado. They also congratulated the representatives of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Chile, Mexico, Brazil and Belize on their national days.

Earlier, in a meeting of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI), the Joint Working Group of CIDI and the Permanent Council to prepare the Plan of Action of the Social Charter of the Americas was installed, in fulfillment of a mandate from the General Assembly of Cochabamba. The Chair of CIDI and the Permanent Representative of Belize, Nestor Mendez, told representatives a consensus had been reached to have the Chair and Vice Chair of the current Working Group, Ambassadors Walter Alban of Peru and Hubert Charles of Dominica, respectively, continue in their positions.

During the meeting, the representatives of Peru, Mexico, Belize, Argentina, the United States, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Uruguay, Colombia, Barbados, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Jamaica, Haiti, Bolivia, Chile, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Ecuador took the floor. The Permanent Observers of Italy and Spain also spoke.

A gallery of photos of the event is available here.

The video of the event will be available here.

Jackson jury ends deliberations until Tuesday

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A jury deciding a negligence lawsuit filed against a concert promoter after the death of Michael Jackson has recessed for a long weekend without reaching a verdict.

The panel will resume talks Tuesday.

The six women and six men spent five hours deliberating on Friday and two hours Thursday.

The suit filed by Jackson's mother claims AEG Live LLC was negligent in hiring Dr. Conrad Murray, who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter after giving the singer an overdose of the anesthetic propofol.

The jury has asked to see a contract drafted by AEG Live for Murray's services and the video "This Is It," a documentary based on rehearsals for Jackson's comeback shows.

A lawyer for AEG had suggested they watch the film to see that Jackson was in fine form until shortly before his death.

Woods voted PGA player of the year

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Tiger Woods was voted PGA Tour player of the year for the 11th time on the strength of his five big wins and return to No. 1 in the world.

It was the third time Woods won the Jack Nicklaus Award despite not winning a major. He made up for that with two World Golf Championships and The Players Championship among his five wins. No one else won more than twice this year, and Woods won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average and the PGA Tour money title.

"It's been an incredible year to have won five times, two of those World Golf Championships and one Players," Woods said on a conference call Friday. "It's been just a fantastic year all around. It's also an incredible feeling to be voted by your peers, and to have that type of respect is something that's very humbling."

The PGA Tour does not release the percentage of votes won or even who finished second.

Jordan Spieth was voted rookie of the year in a race that likely was no contest. The 20-year-old Texan began the year with no status on any tour. He won the John Deere Classic, lost in a playoff at another event, reached the Tour Championship, was chosen for the Presidents Cup team and wound up 10th on the money list with nearly $4 million.

He will be the youngest American ? and first PGA Tour rookie ? to play in the Presidents Cup next week in Ohio.

"I don't know if it's a 'pinch me' moment yet," Spieth said. "I think my mind is still really on next week."

Woods was on the ballot with British Open champion Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Adam Scott, FedEx Cup champion Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar. Mickelson also won the Phoenix Open and was runner-up in the U.S. Open for the sixth time. Along with his first major, Scott won The Barclays. If either of them had won the Tour Championship, three wins and a major might have won some votes over five big wins and no majors.

Mickelson, with more wins (42) and majors (five) than any player except for Woods dating to the Tom Watson generation, has never been PGA Tour player of the year, No. 1 in the world ranking or won a PGA Tour money title.

The Jack Nicklaus Award began in 1990. In 24 years, Woods has won it 11 times and only two other players have won it twice ? Fred Couples (1991, 1992) and Nick Price (1993, 1994). It was the fourth time in the last five years that the winner did not capture a major.

Woods nearly made it a clean sweep of all the awards. Steve Stricker narrowly beat him out for the Byron Nelson Award with a 65 on the final day at East Lake in the Tour Championship. That award is for lowest scoring average, though it is not as prestigious as the Vardon Trophy from the PGA of America. The Vardon Trophy dates to 1937 and requires 60 rounds (instead of 50 for the PGA Tour's version of the award) with no incomplete rounds.

It was the first time since 2009, right before his personal life unraveled, that Woods won these awards. Even though he has more of them than anyone in history, he said that it doesn't get old.

"I know how hard it is," Woods said. "I've had to work my way back from injuries on numerous occasions throughout the years. These last couple years is no exception to that. There were a lot of people saying I could never win again, and two years later I've got eight wins on our tour. I'm very proud of where I've come from, from being ranked outside the top 50 to being ranked where I am now, and to have had the success that I've had this year just makes it all the more rewarding."

He said his biggest win this year was at The Players Championship, mainly because it's the one golf course he plays regularly that has given him fits. His other wins this year came on courses where he won for at least the fourth time.

"You start playing golf courses that you like and that suit your game," Woods said. "Guys generally play that schedule and give themselves the best opportunity to win tournaments and to have a nice living out on tour. For me, The Players Championship is the big event and against probably the strongest field we play all year. I haven't had a lot of success since 2001.

"To finally put myself there with the chance and the way I was hitting it to get it done on that Sunday, boy, it sure felt good."

Woods and Spieth won two different awards, though both pointed to the area of improvement ? the majors. Woods has been stuck on 14 majors since 2008, though he had a chance in the final round this year at the British Open. Spieth missed the cut at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship and tied for 44th in the British Open.

"I think next year I'm really going to focus on those," said Spieth, who is No. 21 in the world. "Maybe build a schedule or game plan around how to have success and maybe compete at those four events, and I think that would be a better year for me."

Texas May Sue Obama Regime For Signing U.N. Arms Treaty?

Nice.

Via The Hill:

Texas attorney general Greg Abbott (R) is threatening to sue the federal government after Secretary of State John Kerry signed the U.N. arms treaty this week.

?Texas stands ready to lead the charge to have the treaty overturned in court,? Abbot said Wednesday, according to the?Austin American Statesman.

?By signing this treaty, the Obama administration has attempted to subject Americans? right to bear arms to the oversight of the United Nations,? he continued. ?The very reason we fought for independence was to free ourselves from the dictates of leaders in other lands.?

Bankrupt Stockton, California says has deals with key creditors

By Jim Christie

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Stockton, California said on Friday it had struck tentative deals opening the door to settlements with two major creditors, and putting the city at the "beginning of the end" of its bankruptcy case.

The deals also could avert a major court fight promised by the creditors, bond insurers that led opposition to Stockton's bankruptcy and who had threatened to drag the state pension fund Calpers into their fight with the city.

In a draft of its plan for exiting bankruptcy, Stockton said it had the "outlines of a negotiated settlement" with bond insurer Assured Guaranty over $124.3 million in outstanding pension obligation bonds the city had targeted for losses.

The draft plan also disclosed a preliminary deal with bond insurer National Public Finance Guarantee over $45.1 million in outstanding lease revenue bonds for the city's arena that had been in dispute.

The draft plan provided no details on the potential settlement with Assured and a spokesman for the bond insurer declined to comment. The draft said Assured executive management had not yet reviewed the deal.

"As this document was being finalized, the City was in negotiations with this creditor and had developed the outlines of a negotiated settlement," the draft said.

It also said a preliminary term sheet agreement had been reached with National, along with agreements on other bonds insured by it relating to parking garages and a city building.

National spokesman Kevin Brown confirmed the deal to Reuters: "We're pleased to have reached a settlement agreement with the City of Stockton that should expedite its exit from bankruptcy."

The draft said Stockton is near the "final chapter" of bankruptcy, noting that "while we expect further intense negotiations and court hearings, with perhaps a set back here and there before this is over, this at least is the beginning of the end."

National and Assured led efforts by Stockton's so-called capital markets creditors to block the city's bankruptcy case from moving forward, and they had insisted city pensions managed by Calpers be treated like other debt the city wanted to impair.

The U.S. municipal bond market has been watching Stockton's bankruptcy case closely for more than a year as the city in California's Central Valley had been aiming to force bondholders to swallow losses while leaving pensions untouched.

Alabama's Jefferson County in its bankruptcy restructuring plan in June proposed losses for bondholders, becoming the first local government to do so since the 1930s.

Pension costs are a growing concern for the $3.7 trillion municipal debt market and National and Assured contested Stockton's maintaining payments to Calpers, the California Public Employees' Retirement System.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Klein in April found Stockton eligible for bankruptcy protection and said the showdown the insurers sought over payments to Calpers would have to wait until the city filed its plan for adjusting its debt to exit from bankruptcy.

Calpers, had been sidelined in Stockton's bankruptcy proceedings but was ready to help defend its pension payments.

A spokeswoman for the $269 billion pension fund released a statement hinting at a truce with Stockton's capital market creditors. "We are hopeful this proposed plan of adjustment will allow Stockton to regain its footing and continue to provide the essential services to its citizens," the statement said.

Stockton's draft plan said the city would keep paying into Calpers, noting it would "reform and reduce the costs of its pension program along with other post-employment benefits, but retain the basic Calpers pension which is crucial to the City's ability to recruit and retain a quality workforce."

Dale Ginter, a lawyer for Vallejo, California's, retired employees in that city's bankruptcy, said he sensed exhaustion on the part of Stockton's bond insurers: "People are probably tired. They've spent a lot of money on attorneys fees".

Ginter also believes the bond insurers saw they may be better off cutting deals than continuing to contest pension payments in court when city employees and retirees had given up so much in concessions to help the city fix its finances.

"The employees and the retirees are taking a very big reduction in benefits," said Ginter after reading through Stockton's draft plan.

It projected Stockton's general fund through fiscal 2049-2050 would save $659 million from pension reforms while ending medical benefits for retirees would save $812 million over the same period.

The timing for a clash with Stockton over its plan for adjusting its debt to exit bankruptcy also would have been problematic for the bond insurers.

Stockton's city council recently put a measure to increase the city's sales tax on the November ballot to in part help the city exit bankruptcy following its austerity measures.

With revenue tumbling as its housing market crashed, Stockton cut $90 million in spending from 2008 through last year to balance its budgets and slashed its work force. But early last year Stockton's city council rejected deeper cuts due to concerns about public safety amid a spike in violent crime and it approved declaring bankruptcy.

Stockton's city council will take up the draft on October 3 and the city could file a final plan with Klein early next month. With about 300,000 residents, Stockton was the most populous U.S. city to file for bankruptcy until Detroit filed in July.

Google Search app for Android updated with location-based related websites and more

Google Search app for Android updated with locationbased related websites and more

Today's the day for updates to Google's Android apps. The latest to get a revision is the company's main Search app, which sees a slew of new features and minor tweaks. That includes the ability to display a related website based on your current location, as well as offer sports and flight updates in realtime instead of on a 15-minute delay. Beyond that, you'll now be able to set reminders based on things like album or book releases, view event tickets from select websites, and see additional Smart TV cards (which require an actual smart TV) for news and music that's currently on your TV. Another feature that's said to be "rolling out gradually" is the ability to automatically tell others when you've left work. You can find the full rundown of all the new features (and the app itself) in the Google Play store.

Cal voted one of the top sports figures to follow on Twitter

First there was the news that John Calipari has more Twitter followers than all of the BCS-level college basketball coaches combined. Now he?s being tabbed as one of the top 100 figures in all of sports ? whether we?re talking athletes, coaches or media ? to follow.

Coach Cal made Sports Illustrated?s ?Twitter 100,? a list of the best sports follows based on a poll of SI staffers.

Here?s what they had to say about Calipari:

It should come as little surprise that it?s the Wildcats? fearless leader who reigns supreme among hoops coaches in the Twitter arena. With more than a million followers, Calipari has used the platform to rally Wildcats faithful (often via hashtag #BBN), give updates on his program and show off his famous friends (among them Drake and rapper-turned-sports-agent Jay-Z).

If you?re not one of the nearly 1.25 million followers, follow him now at twitter.com/UKCoachCalipari.

Football Coach Suspends Entire Team Because Of Bad Behavior

A high school football coach in Utah is receiving national attention for suspending every player on his team. The coach decided to suspend 80 players in total because of a combination of players skipping class, bad grades, and being accused of cyber-bullying a fellow student.

CBS News reported that just last week,?Union High School football coach Matt Labrum?told his players that the football season would be over until they earned their way back onto the team. The decision was supported by the coaching staff, the school, and the parents.

The coach met with Utah?s KSL-TV?to discuss the suspensions saying ?It just felt like everything was going in a direction that we didn?t want our young men going. We felt like we needed to make a stand. They are just excellent men. Sometimes we do think we?re bigger than the game.?

Labrum laid out a mandatory criteria that each player would need to meet in order to rejoin the squad: attend all practices, be on time, have no discipline problems. Each player would also need to complete a community service project and memorize a quote about good character.

It took only a week for some of the players to start turning around their bad behavior.?Not all of the team met that criteria, but most did, and they will be able to take the field for the school?s?homecoming game on Friday.

I Lost Weight: Jesse Barocas Committed To Working With A Trainer And Lost 55 Pounds

Got a success story of your own? Send it to us at success.stories@huffingtonpost.com and you could be featured on the site!

Name: Jesse Barocas
Age: 26
Height: 5'9"
Before Weight: 225 pounds

How I Gained It: Lack of exercise and what felt like mandatory alcohol intake that comes with being in college. I would eat whatever I wanted, but also tried to keep some sort of consciousness about what is healthy and what is not healthy. As it turns out, I didn't even know what it meant to be conscious of my diet, which I think is a problem that most people face.

Breaking Point: I was offered a free session by trainer Steven Bell, and I was left gasping for air after 10 minutes. I was so out of shape I couldn't even lift myself up to do a proper sit up.

How I Lost It: Working with a trainer one-on-one, three times a week. I committed 110 percent to my trainer. I was nervous, and I knew I was going to be in pain, but I also knew I could do it. It was a decision to change how I think, and a decision to change my body. I ate what he told me to eat, I did what he told me to do, and I saw the results. I lost 60 pounds in six months. I had taken a hiatus from my social life, and the next time my friends saw me, many of them didn't recognize me. I was given a fresh start. Soon after I started training, I knew I was never going to go back to a sedentary lifestyle.

I started eating breakfast! It is absolutely true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I started spacing out my food more and portioning better. I ate two or three larger meals and two or three snacks, for a total of five or six meals a day. I started drinking a ton more water. I hate the term diet; diet means temporary. In order to change your body, you must change your lifestyle. No matter where you are coming from, that is always attainable. Start with the small things like sodas, candies, white flour and fast food, and start making adjustments and goals of eating more vegetables and fruits, little by little.

Today, I'm working on getting more explosive, rather than losing weight or gaining muscle. I focus on specific muscle groups and use heavy weights to improve my overall power. Check out my workouts on Instagram. I love to workout with kettlebells, and I also run to make sure I burn fat. Who doesn't want to burn body fat?!

Losing weight not only made me feel healthier and look better, it gave me a new career. I went to Boston University to become a television producer. Little did I know that my calling would end up in the fitness industry, as a motivating life coach and personal trainer.

After Weight: 170 pounds. Since losing 55 pounds of fat, I've put on 25 pounds of muscle.

Fashion trends arrive on Emmys red carpet

Emmy Awards red carpet trends seemed ripped from the runway on Sunday, with romantic lace overlays, graphic black-and-white combinations, strategic skin-baring slashes and tough-girl harnesses.

There were a few fashion risks among the early arrivals, including Zosia Mamet of "Girls" in a watercolor-print dress with a white bib front with black on the bustline by Honor, a new player on the celebrity circuit. Aubrey Plaza of "Parks and Recreation" wore a harness-top gown by Marios Schwab that featured black lace over a sand-colored gown.

But expect the established names to take the big credits, including Emilia Clarke of "Game of Thrones" in a chalk-blue gown with geometric leaf cutouts by Donna Karan Atelier, Claire Danes of "Homeland" in a champagne-colored beaded gown by Atelier Versace and Robin Wright of "House of Cards" in a black silk-cady gown by Ralph Lauren.

Wright's children ? her dates for the night ? were also expected to be in Lauren.

Heidi Klum turned up in a hard-edge halter gown by Versace that her date, "Project Runway" co-star Tim Gunn, described on E! as "pomegranate."

Gunman's employer sought Navy consulting work

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A little more than 24 hours after an IT contractor gunned down a dozen workers at the Washington Navy Yard, the CEO of the company he worked for sent an email to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus saying he has the experience to help the military improve its security.

The email from The Experts chief Thomas Hoshko, which included descriptions of his background and expertise, stunned some Navy leaders still reeling from the shooting rampage Monday that left 13 people dead, including the gunman, former Navy reservist Aaron Alexis.

And it fueled concern over what defense officials believe may have been failures by the company to alert the military about Alexis' apparent mental health problems.

In the email, which was obtained by The Associated Press, Hoshko said he was "dramatically" affected by the incident and "my heart and prayers go out to the families and friends of those innocent victims." But the email quickly moves on, as Hoshko lays out his work experience and offers his services, saying he is "confident that I can provide valuable input and solutions to the process that will provide better security for the military, contractors and civilians."

Navy officials confirmed that email was sent to Mabus, but they declined to characterize its contents.

Florida-based The Experts declined to comment.

Revelation of the email comes as the Navy and the Defense Department launch a series of short- and long-term reviews into Alexis' Navy service history, the Pentagon's security clearance procedures, overall safety at defense installations around the world and the responsibilities that contractors have in reviewing their workers and notifying the military about potential problems.

One of the first reviews ordered by Mabus into the nearly four years of Alexis' troubled Navy career, is almost complete, according to the Navy. Mabus had asked for a review of Alexis' service record to determine if his behavioral problems while in the Navy should have affected his ability to keep his security clearance.

A secret security clearance is good for 10 years. It carries over, even if a worker leaves the military and joins a private company, as long as the gap between the two jobs is not more than two years. As a result, Alexis' clearance level was simply verified when he went to work for The Experts, but no additional research or checks were done.

Officials have acknowledged that a lot of red flags may have been missed in the months and years before Alexis brought a sawed-off shotgun into Building 197 at the Navy Yard and began shooting workers in a drawn-out assault that ended when he was killed in a gunbattle with police. Alexis had maintained his secret level security clearance and passed at least two background checks despite a string of minor arrests, mental health issues and some recent bouts of suspicious conduct that raised worries even within the company.

California free to impose carbon fuel cap, court rules

California won an appeal this week that will allow it to impose a cap on carbon emissions in fuel sold in the state.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) adopted the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) to cut carbon in transportation fuels sold in California. The standard, implemented by Executive Order S-1-07 in 2007, took effect in 2011, and imposed a 10 per cent cut in fuel carbon emissions by 2020, using a 2010 baseline.

The LCFS considers the entire lifecycle of a fuel, including emissions created during production and transportation, which drew a lawsuit from organisations including the Rocky Mountains Farmers Union, corn and soy bean growers, and the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers Association.

The lawsuit argued that the standard discriminated against their fuels, because of the extra emissions they incurred to get it into the state. It also interfered with interstate trade, breaking existing laws, they said. In 2011, a district court agreed, but this week, the appeals court overturned that decision.

"We will not at the outset block California from developing this innovative, non-discriminatory regulation to impede global warming," said Judge Ronald M Gould in his decision. "If the Fuel Standard works, encouraging the development of alternative fuels by those who would like to reach the California market, it will help ease California's climate risks and inform other states as they attempt to confront similar challenges."

The ruling enables the State to continue with its implementation of the standard, following the suspension of the district court's injunction in April 2012 while the appeal took place.

Representatives from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) said that the decision would guarantee Californians "better, cleaner choices at the fuel pump".

Ukraine leader says on course for EU deals, stalls on Tymoshenko

By Pavel Polityuk

YALTA, Ukraine (Reuters) - Ukraine's president said on Friday he was trying to resolve a standoff over jailed opponent Yulia Tymoshenko, whom European leaders want freed before a landmark summit, but that no decision had been made.

President Viktor Yanukovich, speaking at a gathering of European leaders and officials in Crimea, said his ex-Soviet republic remained on course to sign key agreements with the European Union at a November summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

"Ukraine's move towards European standards is the central pivot of our policy of European integration," he told the international conference in Yalta.

But he stalled over what the future held for Tymoshenko, a former prime minister and his most formidable political rival, who was jailed for abuse of office in 2011 after a trial which the EU has said smacked of selective justice.

Answering questions from her political allies during a panel discussion, Yanukovich said: "We are trying, and are seeking even today, to find a way of approaching this very difficult question relating to Tymoshenko."

European envoys have been pressing him to pardon her so she can go to Germany to get treatment for back trouble which has kept her confined in hospital under prison guard.

But he said: "At the moment, we have not yet said either 'Yes' or 'No' (to her being released)", adding there was still time to work out a compromise.

Asked if he would sign a pardon, Yanukovich appeared to suggest Tymoshenko would first have to acknowledge her guilt.

"Nobody has a bigger interest in solving this issue than I. But there are obstacles. An answer has to be given to ... the courts. Only the court can give an answer or (there can be) a voluntary decision by Tymoshenko. The answer lies in finding a compromise with the participation of Tymoshenko," he said.

The agreements on political association and free trade which Ukraine, to the dismay of its former Soviet master Russia, is hoping to sign with the European Union at Vilnius will require the backing and subsequent ratification of all 28 member states.

Some in the EU say no progress can be made in Vilnius unless concrete steps are taken to release Tymoshenko.

Others are working on a compromise that may allow progress in Vilnius as long as Ukraine makes specific commitments on her case. It remains far from clear that any compromise will be acceptable to all EU countries.

LITHUANIA'S PLEA

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, appeared adamant that Tymoshenko had to be freed.

"The request from the European Union on Tymoshenko's case is still on the table and, without a solution, I do not see a possibility for the signature," she told journalists.

Tymoshenko is Yanukovich's fiercest opponent who ran him close for the presidency in February 2010. She was later jailed after a trial which she said was part of a vendetta carried out on Yanukovich's orders.

If released and allowed to become politically active again, Tymoshenko, a fiery populist, could endanger Yanukovich's prospects of re-election to a second term in 2015.

Yanukovich has come under strong pressure from Moscow to give up its drive towards integration with mainstream Europe and instead join a Russian-led customs union with promises of cheaper gas and softer duties on goods.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday again warned Kiev that Russia would retaliate with protectionist measures to guard its markets against highly competitive EU goods if Ukraine signed the agreements in Vilnius.

Yanukovich said Ukraine did not want to set East against West. "We want to bring them together in order to create a single economic space from Vancouver to Vladivostok," he added.
