LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Beauty is in the eye of the Google Glass wearer.

At least that?s what the Internet search giant hopes a handful of young filmmakers will discover. Google is enlisting film students from five colleges to help it explore how its wearable computing device can be used to make movies.

The $1,500 Google Glass headset is already being used by 10,000 so-called explorers. The device resembles a pair of glasses and allows users to take pictures, shoot video, search the Internet, compose email and check schedules.

As part of its experiment, Google will lend each school three pairs of Google Glass.

The participating schools are American Film Institute, California Institute of the Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, University of California, Los Angeles, and University of Southern California.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Penn State's former president told investigators that he knew better than to jump to conclusions that Jerry Sandusky's "horsing around" in a university shower naked with a boy could have been sexual in nature.

Graham Spanier made the comment during April 2011 grand jury testimony that was read aloud for the first time in a Harrisburg courtroom Tuesday.

The hearing for Spanier and two other former university officials is to decide whether there's enough evidence to warrant a trial on the charges against them in the child-sex abuse scandal.

Prosecutors say the defendants failed to tell police about a sex-abuse allegation against Sandusky in 2001. But the defendants say they weren't told that Sandusky was molesting the boy.

Police also investigated complaints about Sandusky showering with boys in 1998, but Spanier says he knew nothing about that.

Updated today at 10:09 AM

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WHAS11) -- The Republican Party of Kentucky has suspended its spokeswoman after she was arrested for driving under the influence in Lexington late Saturday night.

Kelsey Cooper was placed on a two week unpaid suspension, said RPK Chairman Steve Robertson, who added that Cooper would not be available for comment.

"She has learned a very valuable lesson about what she should and shouldn't do," Robertson said. "We look forward to moving forward from here." Since Cooper was hired as the RPK Communications Director earlier this year, she has been an active and vocal critic of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes.

WKYT-TV in Lexington reports Cooper stopped her car near officers Saturday night and told them she was lost.

Fish oil and prostate cancer study is full of holes - Nutrition & Healing

Study linking fish oil to prostate cancer stinks to the gills

It?s a little-known scientific fact that men are biologically incapable of telling the truth about fish. It seems like every fish we?ve ever caught ? or, more often than not, ?almost? caught ? doubles in size every six months.

In fact, there?s nothing we fellas enjoy more than sitting around the table, knocking back some brews, and gabbing about those undersea mammoths that got away ? even if we know we?re stretching the truth a bit.

But there are some fish tales that are just too ridiculous to excuse ? especially when the health and well-being of millions of people are at stake. And just recently, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the greatest piece of fish fiction since Herman Melville penned Moby Dick.

You may have seen it ? it was splashed all across national newswires and television programs. A group of scientists from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center made the audacious claim that fish oil may increase your risk of prostate cancer by a staggering 71%! The ink was hardly dry on the study before you could hear the sound of toilets flushing millions of fish-oil capsules all around the world.

There?s only one problem. This research isn?t seaworthy ? in fact, it doesn?t float at all. The study was so filled with incorrect assumptions that it probably should never have been published at all ? and you certainly shouldn?t be basing any health decisions on it. (Dr. Wright recommends an excellent piece by Dr. Michael Murray breaking down the myriad problems with the research. You can see the sources below for more information, but I?ll give you the highlights here.)

You see, researchers based their conclusions on data from the highly controversial Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), looking at blood levels of EPA, DHA and DPA ? three fatty acids in fish and fish oil supplements. Researchers then used that data to draw sweeping conclusions about the links between fish oil and prostate cancer.

But the fact is, this study has more problems than a calculus textbook. First off, SELECT did not collect any data whatsoever on fish consumption or fish oil supplement intake, so it would be literally impossible to link either of those factors to prostate cancer using the SELECT data. SELECT did not seek to learn whether ANY participants EVER took a fish oil supplement in their lives ? let alone ate any fish.

So what about the link between prostate cancer and high blood levels of EPA, DHA and DPA? Well blood levels of these acids are really only meant to provide a glimpse at what you may have consumed recently ? as in the past 24 hours ? and are not considered good indicators of long-term fish or fish oil consumption.

Let me put that another way ? a patient with existing prostate cancer could have eaten a salmon dinner the night before his blood test, and now researchers are trying to connect that dinner with his disease. More likely, you may have had a group of men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer and started taking fish oil to improve their overall health and prognosis.

And that makes sense, because as we have shared with you before, reputable prior research has shown that fish oil can ward off certain cancers, and can improve everything from your heart to brain health. In fact, a respected 30-year study from Sweden found that cutting fish from your diet could increase your risk of prostate cancer by up to 300%!

Your local news may have gone hog-wild over the deeply flawed study ?linking? fish oil to prostate cancer, but you don?t have to. In fact, if you cut fish or fish oil out of your life based on this research, you may be making the health mistake of a lifetime. Just be sure to follow Dr. Wright?s advice and take a mixed tocopherol vitamin E with your fish oil to ward off any oxidative damage.

Because this latest research is more than just a fish tale, friend ? it stinks to the gills.

Alien Planets Older than Our Milky Way Galaxy --Challenge Accepted Theories

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.portaltotheuniverse.org --- Saturday, July 27, 2013
The Daily Galaxy: Two huge Jupiter-sized planets found in 2012 orbiting a star 375 light-years away that will soon transform into a red giant (image above), are among the oldest alien worlds yet discovered according to scientists at the Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany. "The Milky Way itself was not completely formed yet," said Johny Setiawan. During a survey using radial velocity, in which astronomers watch for periodic wobbles in a star's light due to the gravitational tugs of orbiting worlds, Setiawan and colleagues found the signatures of the two planets orbiting the star, dubbed HIP 11952. At an estimated age of 12.8 billion years, the host star?and thus the planets?most likely formed at the dawn of the universe, less than a billion years after the big bang. Based on the team's calculations, one alien planet is almost as massive as Jupiter and completes an orbit in roughly seven days. The other exo planet is nearly three times Jupiter's mass and has an orbital period of nine and a half months. "Usually planets form just shortly after the star formation," Setiawan said. "Second-generation planets might also form after a star has died, but this is still under debate." The discovery indicates ... ...

Dozens dead as Morsi supporters, Egypt security forces clash in Cairo: activists

As the atmosphere in Cairo becomes increasingly tense and combustible protesters took to the streets.? NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, Marian Smith and Daniel Arkin, NBC News

Dozens of people were killed early Saturday when riot police fired on protesters supporting deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in Cairo, activists said.

It was not clear exactly how many people were dead Saturday evening, but the Anti-Coup Alliance, an umbrella coalition of Morsi supporters, said that at least 100 people were killed and 5,000 others were injured in the chaotic clash near the Nasr City neighborhood of the capital.

Many of the bodies of those killed were still at a field hospital near the pro-Morsi protest site and were not officially registered with health officials. The official death toll of 21 was based only on bodies tallied at backlogged government morgues.

If the death toll of 100 or more is confirmed, it would make the clash the most lethal incident since Morsi was ousted by the military July 3. It comes nearly three weeks after over 50 people, primarily Muslim Brotherhood supporters, died in a similar outburst of bloodshed.

The violence reportedly started after hundreds of Morsi supporters moved out of their encampment outside of the Rabaah al-Adawiyah Mosque late Friday. One group began to pitch tents on an adjoining boulevard, where they planned to camp out for at least three days, said Mahmoud Zaqzouq, a Muslim Brotherhood spokesman, according to The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, Zaqzouq said, another group of protesters moved toward a nearby overpass, where they were met with a barrage of tear gas from police forces, followed by hails of bullets. Protesters counterattacked by throwing rocks and stones at the security forces, according to the AP.

"There were snipers on the rooftops, I could hear the bullets whizzing past me," Ahmed el Nashar, 34, told Reuters, fighting back tears.

"Man, people were just dropping."

Amr Abdallah Dalsh / Reuters

A supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood holds a mask of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi during a rally around Rabaa Adawiya square where they are camping, in Cairo on July 26.

Doctors at a nearby makeshift hospital were flooded by a deluge of casualties as activists rushed bodies away from the carnage, according to The Associated Press.?The majority of the?dead were struck in the head, some between the eyes, according to Reuters.

Hundreds of people participated in rival rallies in various Egyptian cities on Friday, just days after Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged Egyptians to hold rallies to give the military a ?mandate? to confront weeks of violence triggered by his overthrow of Morsi, according to Reuters.

But Brotherhood activists told Reuters they would?not?back?down?and warned of even more violence if security forces did not relent.

"We will stay here until we die, one by one," Ahmed Ali, 24, told Reuters, as he helped tend to casualties at the field hospital.

"We have the examples of Algeria and Syria in our minds. We don't want it to become a civil war. If we take up arms it might become one. This is a religious belief," he said.

Throngs of Brotherhood-aligned activists were massed in downtown Cairo on Friday evening, where they chanted pro-Morsi slogans, some waving the Egyptian flag.

Morsi under investigation
Morsi, who was elected by a narrow margin in June 2012 in the country?s first democratic vote, has been hidden from the public since he was ejected from power. Mena news agency reported Friday that he would be detained for 15 days while a judge reviewed allegations against him. It marks the first formal detention since he was deposed, according to Al Jazeera.

According to Reuters, the probe stems from charges that he conspired with Palestinian Islamist group Hamas to escape jail during the 2011 uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak, killing prisoners and officers, kidnapping soldiers, and lighting buildings on fire.

?At the end of the day, we know all of these charges are nothing more than the fantasy of a few army generals and a military dictatorship,? El-Haddad said, according to Reuters. ?We are continuing our protests on the streets.?

The U.S. was ?deeply concerned? by reports that Morsi had been ordered to be detained for more than two weeks, said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

Hussein Malla / Hussein Malla / AP

Supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, throw stones towards opponents of Morsi and security forces during clashes on a bridge in downtown Cairo, Egypt on Monday,

"We of course are deeply concerned by reports that an Egyptian court has ordered the detention of Mr. Morsi," she said. "I can't speak to the specific charges, but we do believe that it is important that there be a process to work towards his release. Clearly this process should respect the personal security of him and take into account the volatile political situation in Egypt, and that's where our focus is."

Nearly 200 people, mostly supporters of Morsi, have died in the last month, according to Al Jazeera.?

The West has become increasingly alarmed by the course the country of 84 million people has taken. Washington this week said it delayed delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Cairo and called on the Egyptian army to exercise "maximum restraint and caution" during Friday's rallies," reported Reuters.

The U.S. has not made a determination on whether a military coup took place in Egypt, which avoids a decision on whether U.S. aid should be cut off to Egypt.

"It is not in our national interest to make such a determination," State Department spokeswoman Psaki said on Friday, adding the law didn't require that a formal determination be made.?

If the administration were to determine a coup had occurred when Morsi was ousted, the $1.5 billion of military and economic assistance the U.S. provides Egypt would be required by law to stop.?

NBC's Catherine Chomiak and Elizabeth Chuck contributed to this report.

South Carolina Finds That Jadeveon Clowney Did Not Violate Any NCAA Rules by Speaking With Jay Z

Jadeveon Clowney did not break any NCAA rules or accept any impermissible benefits from Jay-Z when he spoke to him recently about possibly joining Roc Nation Sports after the upcoming college football season. At least, that's what the University of South Carolina found out when they conducted a quick investigation into Clowney's relationship with Jay-Z after reports emerged earlier this week about Roc Nation Sports' interest in signing Clowney in 2014. Late yesterday, they put out this handwritten note to clear Clowney of any wrongdoing and to point out that his contact with Jay-Z did not violate any NCAA rules:

It's a little weird that USC Athletic Director Steve Fink made the announcement through a note. It's also a little weird that USC sped through the investigation process in less than a week. But at least they looked into it themselves rather than allowing the NCAA to get involved right away. And if nothing else, that should help Clowney stay eligible for the 2013 college football season. Stay tuned to see if the NCAA decides to get involved in the investigation at some point in the near future.

Armenian president condoles on Spain train crash

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Thursday sent a letter of condolences to the King of Spain Juan Carlos I over the deadly passenger train crash in Galicia the previous night.

Eighty people were killed and more than 100 people were injured when a train carrying 218 passengers derailed on July 24 to become Spain?s worst such accident in more than 40 years.

?Sharing your and the Spanish people?s pain, I wish tenacity and resolve to the families and friends of the victims and a speedy recovery to the injured,? Sargsyan said in his letter, as quoted by the presidential press service.

Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan also sent condolences to his Spanish counterpart over the tragedy.

Oil near $107 as China manufacturing weakens

    PABLO GORONDI
    Associated Press

Weak manufacturing data from China dragged the price of oil down close to $107 a barrel Wednesday as traders awaited confirmation of a report showing another decline in U.S. crude supplies.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for September delivery was down 10 cents at $107.13 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 29 cents to settle Tuesday at $107.23.

A HSBC survey released Wednesday showed China's manufacturing at an 11-month low this month, a disappointing performance that puts pressure on Chinese leaders to reverse a deepening slowdown in the world's second-largest economy.

"A further slowdown in the manufacturing sector added to investor unease ... putting further pressure on labor markets and reinforcing the pessimistic outlook for demand growth" in China, said a note from Sucden Financial Research in London.

The U.S. government's weekly report on America's inventories of crude -- the market benchmark -- is due later Wednesday and is expected to show another drop in supplies. Falling supplies have helped propel the price of oil to a 16-month high this month, boosting gasoline prices as well.

A survey by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., showed analysts expect a decline in crude oil inventories of 2.6 million barrels for the week ended July 19. That would bring the four-week drop to nearly 30 million barrels.

A report released late Tuesday by the American Petroleum Institute, funded by the oil industry, showed figures in line with analysts' forecasts.

"The API poll forecast a 2.5 million barrel decrease in crude inventories for the week, with stocks at Cushing continuing to display significant drawdowns, dropping by 2.1m barrels, as new pipelines ease supply bottlenecks," Sucden Financial said.

Cushing, Oklahoma, is the trading and storage hub for West Texas Intermediate, the crude oil grade behind the Nymex contract.

Brent crude, traded on the ICE Futures exchange in London, was down 57 cents to $107.85 a barrel.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

-- Wholesale gasoline lost 0.26 cents to $3.0264 a gallon.

-- Heating oil retreated 1.06 cents to $3.0619 a gallon.

-- Natural gas fell 2.8 cents to $3.715 per 1,000 cubic feet.

New Super Smash Bros. will have cool new stuff, but ... - Games Thirst

Masahiro Sakurai wrote in his biweekly column on Famitsu?(via Kotaku) that the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS will be devoid of a story mode and cutscenes. The creator and designer explained that many of the videos from Super Smash Bros. Brawl?s Subspace Emissary mode appeared online, ruining the experience for players.

?Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the Internet. You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I?ve decided against having them.?

Character-specific videos that can be shared online are still a thing, says Sakurai, and Nintendo has also shared some for the game?s new characters. Sakurai went on to add that the 3DS version will include a game mode that will ?act as a separate mode from the standard versus play,? though he did not go into any greater detail.

Lastly, Sakurai also confirmed that the 3DS and Wii U versions of the new Smash Bros. game will feature different stages, and that character customization will be present. Said customization will affect character performance, though Sakurai did not go into further detail.

Lowell couple's wedding bells ring hollow after theft of bands ruins their big day (VIDEO)

LOWELL -- What was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives is now being called "Disaster Day."

Michael Gustafson and Iara Lima realized one hour before their wedding ceremony that their wedding rings and marriage license were gone.

Instead of a joyous celebration, Sunday was a dark day for the Lowell couple, who are still not married.

"I've been thinking about this day my whole life and then guess what? This happens," said Lima, 22. "It's sad. I'm never going to forget it. Just the worst day ever."

"We can try to get the rings back, but we can't get back the experience of a wonderful wedding

Iara Lima, 22, and Michael Gustafson, 24, share their wedding-day horror story. Their rings and marriage license were stolen from their car on Central Street in Lowell as Lima had her hair done on Sunday, just hours before they were to marry. SUN/David H. Brow

day," said Gustafson, 24. "My nephew was all excited about holding the rings, but then I had to tell him that wouldn't happen."

The couple told police that their wedding bands, marriage license, a crystal bracelet and crystal earrings were stolen from their Ford Focus while they were inside a Central Street salon on Sunday. The car, in the salon's parking lot, was broken into while Lima was getting her hair done from 9 to 10 a.m., according to the police report. The couple did not want to publicize the salon's name.

They looked through their bags after the appointment and could not find the jewelry, the marriage license from the city of Lowell, the receipt from the justice of the peace, or the jewelry receipts.

Gustafson said the car was locked while they were in the salon, but there were no signs of forced entry.

"Whoever did it had some skill," he said. "The police officer who did the report said the person can be in and out (of the car) in 30 seconds.

"Next time, we'll keep the items on us," Gustafson added.

The jewelry includes a $600 white gold wedding band for Gustafson, a $500 white gold wedding band with a row of sparkling round diamonds for Lima, a $100 clear crystal bracelet, and $80 stud earrings with crystal balls. The bracelet and earrings were wedding gifts for Lima.

The jewelry and marriage certificate were inside a blue Swarovski jewelry bag that was stolen from the car's back seat, Gustafson said. It was possible the brand name "Swarovski" was visible as the thief walked by, he said.

"Our wedding was ruined," said Gustafson, a substitute teacher who hopes to work full time in Lowell Public Schools soon. "It was obviously devastating: a day that was nothing like we expected, nothing like we wanted."

Lima said she wanted to go home and cry after the theft, but their families were waiting at the ceremony in Boston's Copley Square. It was a small gathering of about 20 family members on the grass

Iara Lima and Michael Gustafson say they will still get married, but the theft of their rings and license forced them to postpone the wedding and ruined what should have been the happiest day of their lives. SUN/David H. Brow

next to the John Hancock Tower.

Despite the awkwardness without rings and a marriage license, they said it was comforting to have family there, and they had an enjoyable reception at Fogo de Chao, a Brazilian churrascaria steakhouse in Boston.

"Being around family made it easier, absolutely," said Lima, who works at the TD Bank in Dracut. "They were trying to do anything they could for us."

They've put up fliers and notified police and pawn shops about the incident, but Gustafson is not expecting to recover the rings.

However, Deputy Superintendent Bill Taylor said the department is looking into another theft from Sunday morning about four blocks from the jewelry theft. An unidentified man broke into a woman's car on Lawrence Street around the same time of the wedding heist, Taylor said.

The man, described as dark-skinned, possibly in his 20s, wearing a gray T-shirt with black shorts, took the woman's Global Positioning System (GPS), according to Taylor.

"The detective unit is seeing if they can find evidence to match it up and tie the two incidents together," Taylor said.

There were no surveillance cameras near the crime scenes, according to Taylor. Deputy Superintendent Arthur Ryan also said that police monitor transactions at pawn shops to locate stolen items.

"It can be very difficult but not impossible," Ryan said. "We try to monitor shops as best we can, but there are certainly incidents where shops don't fulfill their obligations as responsibly as they should."

If the bands aren't recovered, Gustafson said he is exploring homeowner's insurance or going back to Kay Jewelers for a potential discount on the bands.

In addition, they received another marriage license on Monday and plan to be married sometime this week in the justice of the peace's office.

"Yeah, the wedding day was ruined, but we're still getting married, we're both OK, we still love each other and that's what's really important," Gustafson said. "Our marriage is more important than the wedding."

Anyone with information about the theft should call Lowell police at 978-937-3200.

Menthol cigarettes worse than regular: FDA

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? A Food and Drug Administration review concludes that menthol cigarettes pose a greater public health risk than regular cigarettes.

The federal agency released the independent review on Tuesday. It is seeking input from the health community, the tobacco industry and others on possible restrictions on the minty smokes.

An advisory panel told the FDA in a 2011 report that removing menthol cigarettes from the market would benefit public health because the flavoring has led to an increase in smokers and makes quitting harder. The report, however, said menthol smokers are not likely to be at a higher risk of disease or exposed to a greater number of toxins.

The FDA's review reiterates those findings but does not make a recommendation on whether to limit or ban menthol in cigarettes.

David Weir looks to revive London 2012 memories at Anniversary Games

    12:34 PM

Six-time Paralympic gold medalist David Weir is hoping this weekend?s Sainsbury?s Anniversary Games will allow people to bask in the memories of the London Games still further.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Weir, 34, took four golds in his home Paralympics last summer and will race in a one-mile wheelchair exhibition event on Sunday as part of the Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium.

The London Paralympics were a watershed moment for the movement, with over 2.5million tickets sold across all sports.

But Weir wants this weekend?s event, which also includes a Diamond League meet, to give even more people the chance to sample just a little bit of the spirit of the summer of 2012.

?I had so many Tweets and messages on Facebook asking when people could watch me race because they didn?t have the opportunity to get [Paralympic] tickets,? he told Press Association Sport.

?When this came about I jumped at the chance to see if I could race there and those fans that missed out can come and watch us race again and they are really going to enjoy it.

?It doesn?t matter what race it is I still want to be competitive.

?It is a one-off event and I will try and get a time as fast as I can for the mile, I don?t think there is a record for it at the moment so it would be good to go and get it.

?But it is just going to be great to go and race in the stadium where I had that success last year and please the crowd.

Weir admits he knows whether or not he will compete at the next Paralympics in Rio in 2016 but will not be announcing his decision until later next year.

He believes that will put less pressure on his shoulders as he looks to be competitive at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

?I have got a few more races in the autumn, I have got the Great North Run and maybe the New York Marathon,? he said.

?A good winter?s training and then start with the season, I?m not sure which races I will do yet but the Commonwealth Games will certainly be the main focus for 2014.

?I just don?t want to be pressurised [by revealing his 2016 intentions] and it gives me a two-year plan to get ready for Rio...if I go.?

Japan urges Britain to keep 'major role' in EU

LONDON (Reuters) - Japan has added its voice to international calls for Britain to maintain a leading role in the European Union, saying that membership is a key advantage for companies looking to access Europe's single market.

British Prime Minister David Cameron's promise to renegotiate Britain's role in the EU and hold a referendum on EU membership by 2017 has already been greeted with concern by the United States among others.

A senior official in Barack Obama's administration said in January that the United States needed London to retain a "strong voice" within the EU, and last week British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that withdrawal from the EU would deter investors, undermine trade and damage Britain's global status.

Japan submitted its statement to a review ordered by Cameron into the balance of power between London and Brussels. The submission highlighted that more than 1,300 companies have invested in Britain, creating 130,000 jobs.

"The advantage of the UK as a gateway to the European market has attracted Japanese investment. The Government of Japan expects the UK to maintain this favorable role," a statement on Japan's British embassy website said.

"The (Japanese) government is committed to making its relationship with the EU stronger than ever before. In this context, it expects that the UK will maintain a strong voice and continue to play a major role in the EU."

Book Review? A writer's provocative look at society and crime ...

Book: Understanding the?criminal: Exploring the Nature and Consequences of Imprisonment

    Reviewer: Dr Glenville Ashby

Adam John?McIntyre?embarks on an interesting study as he searches for the elusive elixir that promises social stability and justice. ?McIntyre?s ideas, though?probing our conscience and inviting dialogue, are hardly original. Yet, in cutting to the chase, his exhortations on?crime, the?criminal,?and society, touch a nerve, sounding a salvo for an emotionally charged enquiry.
McIntyre?s background, credentials and experience lend an unmistakable seal to this undertaking. He is impressive, no doubt. A stellar career as an educator in Jamaica, a corrections officer and an innovator in the Cayman Islands? penal system, do not fully cover the enormity of the resources he now offers. He later emerges as a maverick, of sorts, after being derailed ? ending up?on the receiving end of the legal system ? only to be exonerated. ?But is his work definitive? Can anyone truly understand the dynamics of the?criminal?mind??McIntyre, in viewing the problem through various prisms comes close, but not close enough.
To decode a problem that has beset man from the earliest days of his creation is a tall order, one that dwarfs thinkers whose solutions are based on social and material dialectics.?McIntyre?is right in saying that despite soaring accomplishments in science, medicine and the arts, humankind is still socially hamstrung, internecine and and?victims of?their own lust for violence and retribution.
He is right, again, when he states that prison,??by its very nature, is inhospitable to the acquisition of positive values.?
And for all his perspicacity, there is that detectable strain of paradox in his work. He writes, ??.we cannot afford to get it wrong this time, for it is by understanding the?criminal?that we will enhance our chances of co-existing with him, of sharing his world, for, as we now know, the?criminal?is here to stay.?
The corollary to such an assertion raises an emotive debate.? Should society?seek some common ground, some tolerable coexistence with?criminals???Is it at all possible?
McIntyre?courageously hoists substantive blame on society ? individuals and the institutions that spawn social?rejects? It is a sensitive argument, albeit, unquestionable to a degree.??Aren?t our teachers, pastors and counselors often guilty of theft and abuse of office for stealing the hopes and dreams of countless children by their failure to provide the youth with the skills that they need to cope in a changing world??
His argument that faith-based programmes in prisons are therapeutic and useful in the rehabilitation process is measured, impartial and a strong response to detractors.
His views on parenting and the onslaught of technology and secularism on traditional values are well articulated. He?posits that parents must adapt to changing scenarios. And his counsel couldn?t be more crucial. He writes:??A deliberate and intensive effort to teach our youth to manage adversity?needs to be given urgent priority.?
That children create the setting where parents can learn invaluable lessons to cope with life, and, in turn render good counsel to their children is indisputable. ?Parents should switch to the learning mode and pay attention to what their children are trying to teach them,??he demands.
In viewing the society as the fons et origio of?crime?(not the individual),?McIntyre?must see some hope in restructuring our institutions. But his own words on the ubiquity of the criminal mind?could well bury his ambitions.
Understanding the?Criminal?is insightful, analytical, offering panoramic view of prison life; the?conflicting interests between the custodial and therapeutic staff; the prisoners? distrust; the primal fear and survival; the dehumanisation; the erosion of self worth, and the formation of new identities that wage war against a society that in effect has created them.
We also learn that correction officer teeters on the brink of disillusion, a victim of an onerous, ingratuitous profession.
McIntyre, at times verbose, is a worthy writer ? thoughtful, detailed, and deliberate with?an enviable?ability to ?metaphorise? situations for added effect. And there are more than flashes of academic brilliance. Unfortunately, they can be shrouded by his overreaching sensibilities.
As?McIntyre?flirts with the?neuropsychological, the psychiatric and physiological dimensions of the?criminal?mind, the reader begins to fathom the complexity of such a daunting undertaking work, begging the question, ?Is human behaviour really predictable, or, even measurable?
That said, the value, the ?werthurtheil? of?McIntyre?s work will be judged by the results of its application. Will society embrace the author?s call for introspection, for change, for a drastic overhaul of how its culture? In detailing the hubris and untamed?violence of our forebearers I believe? that?McIntyre?has already answered that question.
