Cold weather likely to help natural gas prices

A recent run of cold weather across much of the U.S. and will likely keep natural gas prices up, according to Raymond James analysts.

Natural gas prices have risen 12 percent this month and have helped lift shares of some oil and gas companies. Range Resources, which specializes in natural gas exploration and production, has seen its stock surge 5 percent.

Ultra Petroleum Corp. has climbed 20 percent and EQT Corp., 6 percent. By comparison the Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed 2.7 percent in March.

This winter was the 20th warmest on records going back to 1880, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. But March may be different, at least compared to last year.

NOAA reported that the week ending March 15 was much cooler than the same week in 2012 and below the long-term average. "If you haven't noticed the weather outside, you may have noticed by the number of congested co-workers walking around the office ... the weather has gotten a little chilly the past few weeks," analysts led by J. Marshall Adkins said in their report.

The analysts said that with cold weather extending into early spring, demand for natural gas will likely stay strong.

The government said Thursday that the country's natural gas supplies shrank last week. The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reported that natural gas in storage dropped by 62 billion cubic feet to 1.876 trillion cubic feet for the week ended March 15.That's 21 percent below last year's level of 2.3 trillion cubic feet, but 10 percent above the five-year average.

In Friday trading, natural gas fell about a penny to $3.93 per 1,000 cubic feet in New York. A year ago, natural gas prices were below $2.50.

Tug boat, barge hit pipeline near New Orleans, causing fire

(Reuters) - A tug boat pushing an oil barge struck a pipeline in waters near New Orleans on Tuesday, setting off a fire and injuring the vessel's captain, and there were reports of oil in the water, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard said that all crew members had been able to escape the 47-foot (14-meter) tug, although the captain was reported to have suffered second- to third-degree burns.

It added that the Coast Guard had responded by helicopter and boat to the incident near Bayou Perot, 30 miles south of New Orleans, and said there had been reports of "oil in the water" but gave no further details.

There were no further details about the size of the spill or the type of pipeline hit.

"We are aggressively responding with our state and local partners to mitigate the fire and prevent any potential impacts from oil that entered the water," Coast Guard Commander Russ Bowen of the New Orleans sector said in a statement.

The incident came roughly two weeks after a boat collided with an inactive oil and gas well near New Orleans and caused a small oil spill in inland water off Plaquemines Parish.

There has been a heightened awareness of spills of any magnitude since the Deepwater Horizon disaster that killed 11 rig workers and spilled millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

Oil company BP is currently on trial in a civil case in New Orleans over the spill.

Potential liabilities stretch into the tens of billions of dollars if the judge determines BP or the other defendants were grossly negligent. Oil came ashore from Texas to Florida, threatening livelihoods and state economies dependent on seafood and tourism.

Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" to open Cannes film festival

LONDON (Reuters) - Australian director Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" will open the 2013 Cannes film festival, the world's most important cinema showcase, organizers said on Tuesday.

The adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's account of "Roaring Twenties" America combines serious literary heritage and A-list star power, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role.

DiCaprio will make an appearance at the festival on the famous Croisette waterfront for the first time since 2007.

The opening gala, preceded by a glitzy red carpet fashion parade and followed by parties along the palm-lined Riviera, will also be attended by Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan and U.S. rapper Jay-Z.

"It is a great honor for all those who have worked on The Great Gatsby to open the Cannes film festival," Luhrmann, whose first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago, said in a statement.

"F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael," he added.

DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby in the 3D movie, Carey Mulligan is Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire is Nick Carraway, the narrator.

The festival runs from May 15 to 26 and U.S. director Steven Spielberg is head of this year's jury.

Last year's winner of the coveted Palme d'Or for best picture was Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke for the drama Amour.

(AP) ? Washington authorities plan to extradite a man caught in Oregon who's suspected of killing his grandparents after they picked him up from prison and hosted a welcome home party for him.

King County prosecutors in Seattle expect to file charges against Michael Chadd Boysen, spokesman Dan Donohoe said Wednesday.

Boysen, 26, is accused of killing Robert R. Taylor, 82, and Norma J. Taylor, 80, after they welcomed him to their Renton home after his release from prison Friday.

He was held on a no-bail warrant from the Washington Department of Corrections for violating terms of his release, Donohoe said.

Boysen remains at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, Ore., in serious condition, spokeswoman Amber Shoebridge said Wednesday. He had been in critical condition after he was found with self-inflicted cuts Tuesday evening when police stormed an Oregon coast motel room to arrest him.

Investigators don't know why he went to Lincoln City, Ore., said King County sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West. They also don't know what might have motivated the killing of his grandparents.

The King County medical examiner's office likely will release information Thursday about how the couple died, West said.

Officials believe the Taylors were killed Saturday. Their bodies were found by Boysen's mother when she went to check on her parents.

Detectives have determined that Boysen checked in under his own name and spent Saturday night at a motel in the south Seattle suburb of Tukwila, not far from his grandparents' home, West said.

On Monday, Boysen checked in to the WestShore OceanFront Suites in Lincoln City ? again under his own name. Early Tuesday morning, a motel employee alerted police after recognizing his name and face on a TV news show.

King County sheriff's detectives say Oregon State Police found the Taylors' missing car Tuesday in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Salem, Ore. West says Boysen paid cash for a used Ford Taurus at a nearby used car lot.

In Lincoln City, motel co-manager Leah Kallimanis recalls Boysen as chatty and friendly when he checked in, paying with cash and showing his identification. He said he was on a road trip and registered that he was driving a Taurus.

It wasn't until early Tuesday morning, as she and her husband and motel co-manager Adrian Kallimanis, were watching TV news and going over the previous day's guest log, that it hit her.

"All of a sudden my wife said, 'Oh my gosh, I checked that guy in yesterday.' She looked at the registration form and the name and she said, 'This is the guy who is on the news right now,' " Adrian Kallimanis told The Seattle Times.

After police responded, Boysen reportedly blocked the door of his room with a refrigerator. Police used a robot to urge him to surrender, and used a water cannon and tear gas before breaking through the door.

Officers found him lying on the floor on his back with apparently serious self-inflicted cuts, Lincoln City police Chief Keith Kilian said.

King County Sheriff John Urquhart called Boysen extremely dangerous because of threats he had made while in prison against his family and law enforcement. Authorities didn't learn of the threats until after he made the news, suspected of killing in his grandparents.

The Taylors had picked him up from the Washington state prison at Monroe. They drove him to a meeting with a parole officer Friday, helped him get an identity card from the Department of Licensing and held a party for him.

Boysen had just finished serving nine months in prison on a burglary conviction, said Washington state Corrections Department spokesman Chad Lewis. He was previously in prison between 2006 and February 2011 for four robbery convictions. Those convictions were related to an addiction to narcotic painkillers, Lewis said.

WSJ: Google breaks up maps and commerce unit, Jeff Huber moves to Google X

WSJ Google splits up maps and commerce unit, Jeff Huber moves to Google XIt looks like the shakeups at Google this week aren't over yet. Following Andy Rubin's departure from the Android team and some "spring cleaning" that stuck a fork in Google Reader, The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that the company is breaking up its mapping and commerce unit. According to the paper, maps will now be a part of Google's search unit, while commerce will fall under the advertising group. What's more, the WSJ also reports that the head of that soon-to-be-former unit, Jeff Huber, will be moving to Google X, the lab responsible for projects like Glass and Google's self-driving car.

Update: Jeff Huber has now posted a brief statement on both Google+ and Twitter. He says, "finishing up my first decade at Google, and excited to return to my startup roots and begin the next one at Google X!"

'Beyond the Hills' follows two women's broken relationship

'Beyond,' a movie by Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, is at times unnecessarily repetitive.

By Peter Rainer,?Film critic / March 8, 2013

'Beyond the Hills' was directed by Cristian Mungiu (pictured).

The great Romanian director Cristian Mungiu is best known for ?4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days,? a harrowing masterpiece about abortion and the bond between two female friends. His follow-up film, ?Beyond the Hills,? also focuses on two women: Voichita (Cosmina Stratan), a nun in a remote Romanian Orthodox monastery, and Alina (Cristina Flutur), her childhood best friend and former orphanage roommate, who visits Voichita after a prolonged stay in Germany. It soon becomes clear that the two women had been lovers and that Voichita, resolutely devout, has no intention of going back to her old ways. This revelation unhinges Alina, who has no use for religion.

Mungiu shoots in extended, unbroken sequences, and the asceticism of his style at times mirrors the life he is showing us. The movie is a series of longueurs that don?t add up to a grand design ? at 2-1/2 hours, it?s unnecessarily repetitive ? but it has moments when the spiritual and the secular burst forth in stunning disarray. Former co-owner of Oregon City construction business sentenced in ...

The former co-owner of an Oregon City construction company has been sentenced to five years' probation for failing to send money to the government after collecting federal payroll taxes from employees.

Jeffry Daniel Goodrich of Estacada will have to serve his first year of probation in a residential reentry center. He also was ordered to pay more than $145,000 to the Internal Revenue Service and is barred from running a business.

U.S. District Judge Anna Brown sentenced Goodrich Wednesday in Portland.

Goodrich, 49, pleaded guilty last year to willfully failing to file payroll tax returns and remit payroll taxes for Eagles View Construction, a company he co-owned from October 2005 to September 2006, handling accounting and payroll.

Goodrich no longer works for the company.

In an unrelated case, Goodrich pleaded guilty to bank fraud in November 2005 in connection with altering checks from Eagles View Construction's customers, then depositing the checks in a personal bank account. In October 2006, he was sentenced to five months in federal prison, followed by five months of home confinement.

Brazil: police puzzle over 7 gift-wrapped skulls

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Police in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo are baffled by a macabre puzzle: someone has been leaving gift-wrapped human skulls around town.

Investigator Paul Henry Bozon Verduraz described the case to the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper in a story published Thursday.

The first skull in cherry-red wrapping was found on February 20 in a planter near a residential building downtown. Since then, seven others have been found near Mormon temples or consulates, including those for Russia, the Czech Republic and South Africa. The skulls are old, with traces of dirt.

Verduraz says security cameras captured images of a woman in an ankle-length skirt leaving the skulls, which seem old, with traces of dirt. He thinks this may be part of some sort of ritual.

Free Music App Brings Top YouTube Songs to Your iPhone

Vignesh Ramachandran

Digital music subscription services have brought us the ability to stream millions of songs on our smartphones, but generally the good ones cost the equivalent of at least a couple Starbucks lattes a month. A new alternative lets you do the same, without forking over any cash.

No pennies needed for Music Tube [iTunes link], an app available for iOS devices, which lets you listen to and watch music videos from YouTube's huge swath of content. The app also works on the iPad.

Search by genre, create playlists and see what songs make the top lists in various countries. Songs can even be cached on your device for quicker access the next go around.

In the world of music apps, you could think of Music Tube as a free alternative to digital music?subscription?services, minus the sleek interfaces and guaranteed high quality bit-rates that others might offer. Users are taking notice, however, and as of Wednesday afternoon, Music Tube was the #5 Top Free iPhone App overall on iTunes and in the #1 spot in the music subcategory (beating out Pandora, Spotify and iHeartRadio).

Music Tube may not be up to par with?music service powerhouses like Spotify Premium, but hey ? it's free.

Players' association gives OK to NHL realignment

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL moved a step closer to realignment Thursday as the players' association approved a proposed plan that is set to go into effect next season.

Now that the league has gotten the go-ahead from union chief Donald Fehr, the NHL will only need to get approval from team owners to put it in place.

"The NHL Players' Association confirmed to us today that it has consented to a revised plan for realignment, effective for the 2013-14 season," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. "Our next step will be to bring the proposed plan for realignment to the NHL board of governors for its consideration."

Fehr signed off on the plan after discussions with the union's executive board and said the realignment issue will be "re-evaluated following the 2014-15 season."

No official details of the changes have been released by the NHL, but it is widely believed that teams such as Detroit and Columbus will be put into more travel-friendly divisions in the Eastern time zone, and the Winnipeg Jets ? formerly the Atlanta Thrashers ? will leave the Southeast Division for a spot in the Western Conference.

"It's awesome," Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard said. "These West Coast swings, not only do they take a lot out on us and you guys, but also out on our fans, having to stay up and watch us late at night. To be able to play a lot more in the Eastern time zone is going to be very beneficial."

Up until now, there has been an even split of teams with 15 in each conference. Under the new plan, the East will have 16 clubs in it ? making playoff qualification a bit tougher.

The two divisions out West will contain seven teams each. The East divisions will both contain eight.

Each conference will still have eight teams in the playoffs but the setup will be slightly different.

Instead of the current system, under which the top eight teams in each conference make the playoffs, the new plan will award spots to the top three teams in each division along with the next two teams with the best records as wild cards.

The new Atlantic Division in the East will be comprised of Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, New York's Rangers and Islanders, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington. The Central Division will contain Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto.

"It will definitely be a change," Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader said. "The benefit will be less travel. The disadvantage is 16 teams in the East ? so harder for a playoff spot. It's one of those things that you kind of take the pros and the cons, and it's part of the deal.

"It's something that'll be different, so we'll give it a couple years and see how it goes."

Out West, the new Midwest Division will feature Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg. The Pacific Division will be made up of Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

Jared Fliesler, Square?s VP Overseeing Growth, Joins Matrix As General Partner

jared-flieslerJared Fliesler, who oversaw growth and user acquisition at Square, is crossing over to the venture side from the startup world and joining Matrix Partners as a general partner. A firm that has been around for more than 30 years, Matrix does Series A rounds in the enterprise and consumer space. It’s bi-coastal with offices in both Boston and Palo Alto. They are in companies like ZestFinance, Gilt Groupe, Polyvore, Zendesk and Zong. After working at Square, Google and Slide, Fliesler said that venture capital would give him the opportunity to work with many companies at this optimal period in their lives when they may have found product-market fit and are looking to scale. He said he likes this six-month to two-year period in which companies can afford to grow aggressively in both their customer base and employee headcount. While he was at Square, the company grew from $2 billion processed per year to more than $10 billion and from 800,000 activated accounts to more than 3 million. He had to balance organic growth with other customer acquisition strategies like buying TV and search advertising and cutting deals to put Square readers in 40,000 locations. ?Companies outgrow the early-stage period where you’re really shaking things up — my favorite part,? he said. Being a VC will let him be a ?part-time employee for many companies in that stage and gives me a great vantage point to help them.” Matrix’s general partner Dana Stalder said the firm had a stealth courting period with Fliesler for more than a year. He says he asked friends for a list of the top five operators they knew under the age of 35. Fliesler’s name came up and they had conversations for months where Matrix would ask for his opinion on possible investments. “We were vetting him without telling him,” Stalder said. He added, “Our job is to help founders go from ideas to building category-leading companies. These are seven to nine-year relationships. We needed somebody who had the skill set or background to go through a company’s full life cycle. Jared is passionate about doing exactly that.” Fliesler will be the eighth general partner based out of Palo Alto and he’ll be looking at early-stage investments. He’s the third Square executive of late who has crossed over to the venture side. Square’s Director of Product Megan Quinn went to Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers

Galaxy S III bug disables lock screen, grants full access, tests patience (updated)

Galaxy S III bug disables lock screen, grants full access, tests patience

Lock screens are around for a reason: to keep people from getting where they shouldn't. They aren't always infallible, though, and a few weeks ago, we saw a vulnerability in several builds of iOS 6 that granted access to the phone module without a passcode. Then, a couple of days ago, we reported on a Galaxy Note II bug that allows the quick-fingered to launch anything immediately behind the lock screen. Now, a similar flaw has been found on the Galaxy S III that breaks the lock screen altogether, permitting full use of the phone. To replicate the bug, you'll need to tap the "Emergency Call" button on the lock screen, then go into the ICE (emergency contacts) menu. From there, press the home button, followed quickly by the power button, and that's it. If successful, pressing the power button again will bring up the home screen straight away, and what's more, the lock screen won't return until the handset is restarted. Sounds worryingly simple, right? In our experience, not so much.

We first tried this method on an S III running Android 4.0.4 ICS, and a Note II for good measure, but to no avail. Then, we had a crack at an S III running 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and were close to giving up trying to replicate it when voilà, it worked. We hoped to provide you with a video of the bug, but it must be camera shy. Despite literally hundreds of attempts in front of the lens and several more behind it, we've only managed it once -- we found it impossible to nail down the correct timing between the home and power button pushes. Samsung's likely aware of the bug already and when quizzed about the Note II vulnerability, said a fix for lock screen issues on affected "Galaxy devices" was in the works (read: they didn't say the Note II specifically). We've reached out for comment just to be sure, but until a patch is provided, keep your phone concealed from nosey types who read tech sites and have saint-like patience.

Update: Samsung has responded, confirming a fix is indeed on its way:

"Samsung considers user privacy and the security of user data its top priority. We are aware of this issue and will release a fix at the earliest possibility."

Apple and Google Both Rumored to Launch Music Subscription ...

Quick! Name the next big frontier for tech giants Apple and Google! If you said music subscription services like Pandora, Rdio and Spotify, you?d be right.

Both companies are rumored to have plans for a music subscription business. Google would launch a service through its YouTube division, and Apple executives have been in talks to partner with Beats Audio?s recently announced Project Daisy service.

According to Reuters, Apple?s executive leader Tim Cook met with Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine during a trip to Los Angeles last month. During the meeting, which was also attended by Apple?s Internet product boss Eddy Cue, Cook shared interest in Beat?s ?project Daisy plans but did not discuss firm plans for a partnership.?

Meanwhile CNN reported yesterday that Google?s rumored music solution could be released as a new feature within YouTube. The popular destination for user-submitted video already enjoys high visits for music videos and audio tracks. Convincing its users to embrace an official music subscription service might not be a hard sell.

For now, the rumors with firmer ground seem to be Apple?s partnership with Beats. The Verge reported yesterday that Beats received a $60 million investment from billionaire mogul Len Blavatnik, who also purchased Warner Music Group in 2011. Such a partnership would give Beats a substantial catalogue to launch a new streaming service. The company also acquired music subscription service MOG last year. Adding Apple as a partner could potentially distribute Daisy to hundreds of millions of iTunes users.

Salt identified as autoimmune trigger

Thursday, March 7, 2013

For the past few decades, health officials have been reporting increases in the incidence of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Now researchers at Yale School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute have identified a prime suspect in the mystery ? dietary salt.

In the March 6 issue of the journal Nature, Yale researchers showed that salt can induce and worsen pathogenic immune system responses in mice and that the response is regulated by genes already implicated in a variety of autoimmune diseases.

In accompanying papers in the same issue of Nature, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard identified the key molecular pathway involved in the response to salt, and the Broad Institute sketched out the regulatory network of genes that governs this autoimmune response.

"These are not diseases of bad genes alone or diseases caused by the environment, but diseases of a bad interaction between genes and the environment," said David Hafler, the Gilbert H. Glaser Professor of Neurology, professor of immunobiology, chair of the Department of Neurology, and senior author of the Yale paper.

The research was inspired, in part, by an observation that eating at fast-food restaurants tended to trigger an increase in production of inflammatory cells, which are mobilized by the immune system to respond to injury or pathogens but which, in autoimmune diseases, attack healthy tissue. Researchers at Yale and colleagues in Germany led by Dominik Mueller wanted to know whether high salt content in diet might induce the destructive immune system response that is the hallmark of autoimmunity.

They found that adding salt to the diet of mice induced production of a type of T cells previously associated with autoimmune diseases and that mice on salt diets developed a more severe form of an MS animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

The research at the Broad Institute, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard University, and Yale University expands the understanding of how one type of immune cell ? known as a T helper 17 or Th17 cell ? develops, and how its growth influences the development of other kinds of cells involved in the immune system. Reconstruction of this molecular circuitry confirmed the surprising role of salt, said the researchers.

"The question we wanted to pursue was: How does this highly pathogenic, pro-inflammatory T cell develop?" said Vijay Kuchroo, a senior scientist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a Broad Institute associate member. Kuchroo is also the Wasserstrom Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and co-director of the Center for Infection and Immunity at Biomedical Research Institutes. "Once we have a more nuanced understanding of the development of the pathogenic Th17 cells, we may be able to pursue ways to regulate them or their function."

"Humans were genetically selected for conditions in sub-Saharan Africa, where there was no salt," Hafler said. "Today, Western diets all have high salt content and that has led to increase in hypertension and perhaps autoimmune disease as well."

Hafler noted that all test-tube cell biology is performed based on the salt levels found in blood and not in the tissues where immune cell ultimately travel to fight infections. That may have been a reason salt's role in autoimmunity has gone undetected.

"We may have been using the wrong concentrations of salt in our experiments for the past half-century," Hafler said. "Nature did not want immune cells to become turned on in the pipeline, so perhaps blood salt levels are inhibitory."

Patient trials to assess affects of salt on autoimmune diseases are being planned.

"The value in doing an unbiased analysis is that we're able to understand a lot more about the molecular biology at play and put forth a completely novel process," said Aviv Regev, a Broad Institute core member and an associate professor of biology at MIT. Regev is also an Early Career Scientist at Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the director of the Klarman Cell Observatory at the Broad.

Hafler is not waiting with his own patients.

"I already recommend that my patients use a low-salt, low-fat diet," he said

Markus Kleinewietfeld was lead author of the Yale-led study.

City Council Members Say Bloomberg and Kelly Aren't Listening ...

Perhaps it is Mayor Michael Bloomberg who needs a crash-course on the dangers of earbud volume, because the City Council's Black, Latino and Asian Caucus says the mayor must not be hearing the massive outcry against stop, question and frisk.

The 27-member caucus filed an amicus brief Monday in the federal case David Floyd v. City of New York--a class-action lawsuit that seeks to put an end to the NYPD's racially biased stop-and-frisk policies.

"New York City communities have vociferously made their opposition to NYPD's stop and frisk policy heard," the brief states. "Despite being confronted consistently with community complaints, judicial findings and concerned legislators, the NYPD has refused to acknowledge the policies adverse effects."

The council held numerous public hearings throughout the city in October where hundreds of New Yorkers expressed outrage over the practice.

The brief highlights recently released statistics from 2011, which reveal that blacks and Latinos constituted 87 percent of the 685,000 New Yorkers stopped and frisked that year. To make matters worse, 88 percent of those stopped hadn't committed any crime.

"Indeed the Mayor and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly have repeatedly defended the stop-and-frisk policy," the brief states. "Absent a court-ordered collaboration, the NYPD is not going to engage the community in a process of reforming its street encounter policies."

The caucus argues that stop-and-frisk places a heavy strain on the relationship between the community and law enforcement.

"The present state of polarization and lack of communication between the police and the communities they serve undermines the legitimacy of law enforcement...and ultimately threatens to destroy the fundamental trust and cooperation between the police and the communities," the brief states.

The case is set to go to trial on March 18 in Manhattan Federal Court.

While North Korea hasn't officially confirmed it, South Korea recently confirmed that Ri Sol-ju, Kim?s wife had a child in late 2012. While the gender of the baby isn't known, there's speculation that it's a girl.

The Washington Free Beacon reports that Michael Madden, editor of the online newsletter North Korea Leadership Watch, said he has heard from sources close to the ruling Kim family that the couple had a child.

?If it was a boy, [the North Koreans] would have made an announcement,? Madden said in an interview, commenting on Korea?s traditionally male-dominated society.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press's Michele Salcedo writes that Dennis Rodman has a message for President Obama from Kim Jong-un.

Call me? Maybe?

North Korea's young leader has riled the U.S. with recent nuclear tests, but Kim?Jong Un doesn't really want war with the superpower, just a call from President Barack Obama to chat about their shared love of basketball, according to ersatz diplomat Dennis Rodman, the ex-NBA star just back from an improbable visit to the reclusive communist country.

"He loves basketball. ... I said Obama loves basketball. Let's start there" as a way to warm up relations between U.S. and North Korea, Rodman told ABC's "This Week."

"He asked me to give Obama something to say and do one thing. He wants Obama to do one thing, call him," said Rodman, who called the authoritarian leader an "awesome guy" during his trip. The State Department criticized North Korea last week for "wining and dining' Rodman while its own people go hungry.

Rodman also said Kim told him, "I don't want to do war. I don't want to do war."

Yet in January, after the U.N. Security Council voted to condemn the North's successful rocket launch in December and expand penalties against Kim's government, his National Defense Commission said in a statement that "settling accounts with the U.S. needs to be done with force, not with words." The statement also promised "a new phase of the anti-U.S. struggle that has lasted century after century."

North Korea and the U.S. fought on opposite sides of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953. The foes technically remain at war. They never signed a peace treaty and do not have diplomatic relations.

Rodman was the highest-profile American to meet Kim since Kim inherited power from father Kim?Jong Il in 2011. He traveled to the secretive state with the Harlem Globetrotters team for a new HBO series produced by New York-based VICE television.

The visit took place amid rising tensions between the countries.

North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test two weeks ago, making clear the provocative act was a warning to the United States to drop what it considers a "hostile" policy toward the North.

Rodman said he was aware of North Korea's human rights record, which the State Department has characterized as one of the worst in the world, but said he wasn't apologizing for Kim.

"He's a good guy to me," Rodman said, adding, that "as a person to person, he's my friend. I don't condone what he does."

Basketball is popular in North Korea, and Thursday's exhibition game with two Americans playing on each team alongside North Koreans ended in a 110-110 tie. Following the game Kim threw an "epic feast" for the group, plying them with food and drinks and making round after round of toasts.

Rodman's trip was the second attention-grabbing American visit this year to North Korea. Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, made a four-day trip in January, but did not meet Kim.

Rodman said he planned to go back to North Korea to "find out more what's really going on."

(AP) ? The Senate Intelligence Committee voted Tuesday to approve President Barack Obama's pick to lead the CIA after winning a behind-the-scenes battle with the White House over access to a series of top-secret legal opinions that justify the use of lethal drone strikes against terror suspects, including American citizens.

John Brennan's installation at the spy agency has been delayed as Senate Democrats and Republicans have pressed the Obama administration to allow a review of the classified documents prepared by the Justice Department. The senators have argued they can't perform adequate oversight without reviewing the contents of the opinions, but the White House had resisted requests for full disclosure.

The intelligence committee's chairwoman, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said in a statement Tuesday that the committee voted 12-3 to send Brennan's nomination to the full Senate for confirmation. The panel's deliberations were held behind closed doors. Feinstein said all eight Democrats on the committee voted yes. She did not identify the Republican senators who voted against him.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., the committee vice chairman, said he voted against Brennan because he didn't think Brennan would create the kind of "trust relationship" between Congress and the CIA. He did not specify what his concerns were, however. But Chambliss said he would not encourage other Republican senators to attempt a filibuster of the nomination.

"He'll probably be confirmed," Chambliss said.

Feinstein said the full Senate should act quickly confirm Brennan, who spent 25 years at the CIA before later becoming Obama's top counterterrorism and homeland security adviser in the White House.

Although Brennan has made it out of the committee, Republicans have threatened to hold up his nomination unless the White House supplies them with classified information, including emails among top U.S. national security officials, detailing the Obama administration's actions immediately following the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed during the raid.

Feinstein said the White House has delivered the "great bulk" of the Benghazi records, and lawmakers are awaiting "a few odds and ends that need to come."

The White House released two out of a total of 11 Justice legal opinions to the intelligence committee just hours before Brennan's Feb. 7 confirmation hearing in front of the panel. Two other memos had already been released to the committee.

Feinstein attributed the White House's resistance to providing the legal opinions to a difference of opinion between lawmakers and the Obama administration over what the documents represented.

"The White House tends to look at this as advice to the president, and therefore that advice is protected," she said. But the committee viewed the opinions as the legal advice that underwrites possible actions by U.S. intelligence agencies that Congress is charged with overseeing. "So there are different views of this," Feinstein said.

Brennan so far has escaped the harsh treatment that former Sen. Chuck Hagel, the president's choice to lead the Defense Department, received from Senate Republicans, even though Brennan is one of Obama's most important national security aides and the White House official who oversees the drone program.

During President George W. Bush's administration, Brennan served as a senior CIA official when waterboarding and other forms of "enhanced interrogation" and detention practices were adopted. Brennan has publicly denounced the use of these tactics, but the cloud hasn't gone completely away.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has said Brennan's stance on waterboarding and torture is inconsistent. Although Brennan has decried these methods, he also has said they saved lives, according to McCain, who said he is awaiting an explanation from Brennan. McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., are also leading the charge for the Benghazi records.

Brennan vigorously defended the use of drone strikes during his confirmation hearing. He declined to say whether he believes waterboarding, which simulates drowning, amounted to torture. But he called the practice "reprehensible" and said it should never be done again. Obama ordered waterboarding banned shortly after taking office.

Drone strikes are employed only as a "last resort," Brennan told the committee. But he also said he had no qualms about going after U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in September 2011. A drone strike in Yemen killed al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, both U.S. citizens. A drone strike two weeks later killed al-Awlaki's 16-year-old son, a Denver native.

Brennan spent 25 years at the CIA before moving in 2003 from his job as deputy executive director of the agency to run the Terrorist Threat Integration Center. He later worked as interim director of the center's successor organization, the National Counterterrorism Center.

When Bush's second term began in 2005, Brennan left government to work for a company that provides counterterror analysis to federal agencies. After Obama took office in 2009, he returned to the federal payroll as the president's top counterterrorism adviser in the White House.

If confirmed by the full Senate, Brennan would replace Michael Morell, the CIA's deputy director who has been acting director since David Petraeus resigned in November after acknowledging an affair with his biographer.

Egypt ex-presidential candidate party to contest polls | Morocco ...

CAIRO, March 5, 2013 (AFP)

Former presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh said Tuesday his party will contest Egypt?s next parliamentary elections, boycotted by the main opposition coalition.

The Strong Egypt Party is to field candidates in the staggered legislative polls which start on April 22.

Abul Fotouh told reporters in Cairo he believed parties had to ?stand up to authority? in order to avoid the monopolisation of power.

A former member of President Mohamed Morsi?s Muslim Brotherhood, Abul Fotouh founded the Strong Egypt Party in July 2012 after his defeat in a presidential election a month earlier.

He came in fourth in a first round of polling, with 18 per cent of the vote.

Egypt?s main opposition bloc, the National Salvation Front which groups mainly liberal and leftist movements, announced last week it was boycotting the legislative elections, doubting their transparency.

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? The European Union has fined Microsoft ?561 million ($733 million) for breaking a pledge to offer personal computer users a choice of Internet browsers when they install the company's flagship Windows operating system.

The penalty imposed by the EU's executive arm, the Commission, is a first for Brussels: no company has ever failed to keep its end of a bargain with EU authorities before.

In 2009, Microsoft Corp. struck a broad settlement with the Commission to resolve disputes over the company's abuse of the dominance of Windows, which had spanned more than a decade.

Back then, the company agreed to pay ?860 million and promised to give Windows users the option of choosing another browser rather than having Microsoft's Internet Explorer automatically installed on their machines.

But Microsoft failed to stick to the deal for some 15 million installations of Windows 7 software in Europe from May 2011 until July 2012. The company admitted the failure last year, adding that it was a mistake.

The Commission's top competition regulator, Joaquin Almunia, said at a press conference in Brussels, Belgium, Wednesday that the fine reflected the size of the violation and the length of time it went on for. It was also intended to make an example of Microsoft and deter other companies from doing same thing. In theory, the commission could have fined Microsoft up to 10 percent of its global annual sales during the period the violation took place.

"A failure to comply is a very serious infringement that must be sanctioned accordingly," Almunia said.

Keith Hylton, a professor of law and antitrust specialist at Boston University said the fine was "far in excess of any benefit Microsoft could have gotten from the error, and vastly in excess of any harm to EU consumers, who are all aware of alternatives to Internet Explorer."

In all, Microsoft has now paid ?2.2 billion in fines to the Commission since 1998, when regulators opened their first investigations into the company after Sun Microsystems complained it had been denied access to technical documents. Over the years, the EU has broadened its investigation to include whether Microsoft had abused Window's near-monopoly over the market for computer operating systems to corner other markets, including server software, streaming media software, and Internet browsers.

Anthony Sabino, an antitrust lawyer and professor at St. John's University, said the Commission was right to fine Microsoft for the latest lapse, but the size of the penalty seemed "disproportionate...perhaps even petty, given that Microsoft has paid its fines and yielded to all the demands of the EU."

"They have been slow to acknowledge that, while powerful, Microsoft is not invincible," he said.

Sabino added that Microsoft may be paying the price in part for its aggressiveness in the past in testing the limits of what regulators will tolerate.

Given the length of time the latest violation went on, and the number of users affected, "it does strain credibility" that Microsoft wouldn't have known it had failed to keep its part of the agreement, Sabino added.

For its part, Microsoft was apologetic.

"We take full responsibility for the technical error that caused this problem and have apologized for it," the company said in a statement. "We provided the Commission with a complete and candid assessment of the situation, and we have taken steps ... to help avoid this mistake ? or anything similar ? in the future."

Microsoft's Internet Explorer still has a 56 percent market share for Internet browsers on personal computers, according to statistics by Net Applications. Mozilla's Firefox has 20 percent while Google's Chrome has a 17 percent share. Microsoft is required to continue to offer consumers a choice of browsers through 2014.

But the wider competitive landscape has changed greatly since the Commission started its action against Microsoft. Software applications on mobile phones usually bypass browsers entirely. Tech companies are now often less concerned with Internet browsers and more concerned about Google Inc.'s dominance in Internet search technology, Facebook's dominance in social networking, and Apple's dominance on mobile devices.

"For technology companies, often the best policeman is technological progress itself," Sabino said.

Rather than imposing unilateral fines, Almunia has advocated negotiated settlements since he took over as commissioner in 2010. He believes that competition issues are best resolved quickly and that slapping big fines on companies years after the fact does little to help consumers.

But he said the whole point of a settlement is undermined when companies then don't abide by its terms.

"They must do what they committed to do, or face the consequences," he said.

Almunia conceded that the Commission had been "naive" in appointing Microsoft itself to oversee compliance with the agreement, and said the Commission won't allow that in the future.

Malaysian troops attack armed Filipino group in Borneo

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian troops backed by fighter jets attacked an armed Filipino group on Tuesday, trying to end a standoff on Borneo island after violence that killed at least 27 people and sparked fears of broader insecurity in the resource-rich area.

The operation to seize an area occupied by about 180 Filipinos, dozens of them armed, began at 7 a.m. (2300 GMT Monday), a day after the government sent seven army battalions to Malaysia's eastern Sabah state to reinforce police.

Malaysian media reported local residents as saying they heard several explosions and saw fighter jets circling over the coastal area near the town of Lahad Datu.

"The government has to take the right action in order to preserve the pride and sovereignty of this country," Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said in a statement.

The group, which arrived by boat about three weeks ago, say they are descendants of the sultanate of Sulu in the southern Philippines, which ruled parts of northern Borneo for centuries. They are demanding recognition and an increased payment from Malaysia for their claim as the rightful owners of Sabah.

Malaysia has refused their demands. The Philippine government has repeatedly told the group that it was ready to talk but has urged them to first put down their arms and go home.

"We've done everything we could to prevent this but in the end Kiram's people chose this path," said Ricky Carandang, a spokesman for Philippine President Benigno Aquino, using the sultan's family name.

The violence has sparked a political crisis ahead of elections for both governments.

Prolonged insecurity could also affect Sabah's huge palm oil industry and dampen growing investor interest in energy and infrastructure projects in the state, although the main oil fields are far from the trouble.

Oil majors such as ConocoPhillips and Shell have poured in billions of dollars to develop oil and gas fields in Sabah. Chinese companies have been investing in hydro-power and coal mining.

Two policemen were killed along with 12 militants when Malaysian security forces tried to tighten a cordon around the armed group on Friday. That sparked more violence over the weekend with six policemen and seven more gunmen killed in another area, raising concerns the violence was spreading.

"As a Muslim country that values peace and solves conflict through discussion, our effort to avoid bloodshed in Lahad Datu has not been successful," Najib said.

"Instead, members of our safety team have been attacked and killed, Malaysian civilians in Sabah are worried of their personal safety."

The violence presents Najib with a security headache that could delay an election that must be held by June, adding to nervousness among investors over what could be the country's closest ever polls.

Aquino, facing congressional elections in May, has come under pressure from opponents for supporting Malaysia's rejection of the group's claim to Sabah, which remains a dormant Philippine policy goal.

He in turn has suggested the political opposition encouraged the intrusion as a way of undermining a historic peace deal signed with Muslim rebels last year and embarrassing the government ahead of the elections.

The Philippine foreign secretary flew to Malaysia on Monday to urge "maximum tolerance" against the group. Aquino urged Malaysia not to harm the interests of an estimated 800,000 Filipinos in Sabah, where many work in palm oil plantations.

The Philippines was also asking permission for a Philippine navy vessel to be allowed to provide humanitarian, medical and consular assistance and to take the armed group home.

Why fish is better than supplements: Omega-3s from fish vs. fish oil pills better at maintaining blood pressure in mouse model

Mar. 5, 2013 ? Omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish may have diverse health-promoting effects, potentially protecting the immune, nervous, and cardiovascular systems.

But how the health effects of one such fatty acid -- docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) -- works remains unclear, in part because its molecular signaling pathways are only now being understood.

Toshinori Hoshi, PhD, professor of Physiology, at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues showed, in two papers out this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, how fish oils help lower blood pressure via vasodilation at ion channels. In vascular smooth muscle cells, such as those that line blood vessels, ion channels that span the outer membrane of a cell to let such ions as sodium, calcium, and potassium in and out, are critical to maintaining proper vessel pressure.

The researchers found that DHA rapidly and reversibly activates these channels by increasing currents by up to 20 fold. DHA lowers blood pressure in anesthetized wild type mice but not in mice genetically engineered without a specific ion channel subunit.

In comparison, the team found that a dietary supplement, DHA ethyl ester, found in most fish oil pills fails to activate the same channels, and even antagonizes the positive effect of DHA from natural sources, on the cells. The DHA ethyl ester seems to compete with the natural form of DHA for binding sites on the ion channel.

The team concluded that these channels have receptors for long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, and that DHA -- unlike its ethyl ester cousin -- activate the channels and lower blood pressure.

The findings have practical implications for the use of omega-3 fatty acids as nutraceuticals for the general public and also for critically ill patients who may receive omega-3-enriched formulas as part of their nutrition.

Coauthor Michael Bauer from Jena University Hospital in Germany, who studies sepsis in a clinical setting, says the findings may encourage physicians to have a closer look at the specific formulations given to sepsis patients as they may contain either the free omega-3 acid or the ester.

The findings also underscore the importance of obtaining omega-3 fatty acids from natural food sources such as oily fish.

The study was supported, in part, by the National Institutes of Health (R01GM057654), the German Research Foundation, and Natural Science Foundation of China.
