My stories are unique ? Cynthia, Award winning writer

Cynthia Ogbenyealu Echeme is indeed a writer of international standard. Her script ?Day Break? became a block busting movie in Nigerian movie industry (Nollywood) and still one of the best ever written. Today, she is a pop gospel singer whose album is about to be launched.

She is also a wife, a natural born actress, a scriptwriter and a mother of six children of which the last three are triplets. In this interview with FLORENCE AMAGIYA, she talks about how it started, the home front and her new book ?His Venom?.

Enjoy!
My hubby, my job

I?love writing and I also write for a living. I write prose fiction, poetry and screenplays. I must tell you that I write exceptional and uncommon story-lines. One of my scripts is equally currently being considered by a Movie house in the United States. I also belong to the Helium International Writing Community.

My second literary work in a different genre is also underway from the same publishing company who published my current book. But the third work is in the hands of a different company. During my continuing education program? which I did at the University of Port-Harcourt Continuing Education Center around 1987 or so, I was one of the 3 winners of Thank God It?s Friday?s Radio Rivers2 FM Stereo Writing Quiz contest national broadcast, but I never went to pick my prize.

If Joetex Dumpe is still alive, he would confess that one of the female winners never did come to pick her golden spoons and plates prize till date. That was when I went on my first trip to Cotonou, Benin Republic. When I returned from that trip, I was asked by my now late father to forget that, since somebody may have claimed it.

I childishly agreed. This is just by the way; I hope to produce my own Movie someday, devoid of the many flaws I see in our productions.

Background and accomplishment

I?am from a very large polygamous family of eight and the fifth child, but with other eight lovely half-sisters and brothers. I read Linguistics and Communication Studies from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.? I had my National Youth Service Corpse at Govt. College Ibadan, Apata-ganga where I taught the use of English Language in 1995.

I worked as a contributing story writer for a one time Quarterly Magazine in 1996 which later folded up because the owner suddenly went into politics. But a close acquaintance introduced me to Zeb Ejiro who opted to buy one of my writings for a possible movie production after his Scriptwriter had approved it.

If he later produced it, I couldn?t tell, but his younger brother Chico Ejiro known as Mr. Prolific later bought one of mine through same scriptwriter who saw the marketability of the storyline, but later re-scripted to their taste and standard to give birth to a very successful movie titled ?Day Break?. This must have been around 1996 or 97.

Childhood?

My childhood was interesting and I knew from then that I would be a writer. I began writing in elementary school.

Future plans

I?am presently working towards having my scripts produced internationally. I would also want to produce my gospel pop sooner than later. Above all, I am going for my Masters so as to be a lecturer.

Meanwhile, my new book His Venom is about being launched soon after Easter. And we intend involving a lot governmental personalities and organizations for having deeper understanding of the orphan child which is now a global phenomenon.

My book titled ?His Venom?

My new book titled ? His Venom? is? published by Enaz Publications in Long Island, New York, in U.S.A. His Venom is described as ?an extraordinary?new Novel? by the publisher, and ?a spectacular plot for a new novelist? from editorial review as seen on the amazon.com?s site. This 376-page book tackles multiple social issues with a strong human psychological flavour. This is with reference to the tricky and unpredictable state of the human mind and eyes!

It is equally a sensational piece given its tactical style in handling the highly sensitive issue of the orphan child in the hands of a guardian with reference to the possible causes for which reason such a child is chased from home and dropped on the wolfing street.

The book asks and answers many questions on the predicament of this orphan? child in terms of what happens to him on the many streets of the world where he meets with many ?street wolves?. Does this child live to conquer the street or is he finally swallowed up by the street? These and many other issues are tackled in the book in a very juicy and entertaining manner that the reader wouldn?t know if he or she is going through a didactic multi-concepted story line.

Challenges so far

To be frank, it isn?t easy at all! Playing the role of a mother, house-help, lover and a wife on the African marital stage is no child?s play. It calls for a lot of energy, determination and support from one?s spouse. Thankfully , I am blessed with a supportive hubby who understands and also knows he?s got a highly talented and brilliant wife.

I have six children, but the last three happened to be triplets.? The stress that goes with grooming stubborn triplets is something else. And remember, the other first three children are also there demanding attention too. Among the triplets is a boy, who is the first of the three and the most troublesome and wants everything first. Yet, you cannot give anything to one without extending to the other two.

Imagine what it means to a man if he wakes up in the middle of the night expecting the comfort and warmth of his wife, only to see her typing away on her laptop?? Also, that I have my editing work to accomplish as well. I hardly ever had time to sleep!

My fashion statement

I?would always go for sweetly designed long gowns! I love them though ordinarily, I am a trouser kind of woman. I wear trousers even when I am heavily pregnant.

My form of exercise

My kind of exercise is yoga. Yoga is a very effective means of relaxing the nerves when connecting with your inner-self. The exercise is Asia born, you know, and good for me after all the stress that go with work and family. The green tea is also very medicinal and good for keeping fit when taken without milk.
