TACOMA, Wash. (AP) ? For now, the two young sons of a missing Utah woman are living with strangers.

They are in state custody as the paternal grandfather they lived with in Washington state sits in jail, accused of possessing child pornography and secretly videotaping their mother, other women and naked neighbor girls.

Now, the family of their mother, Susan Powell, is for the first time publicly accusing the boys' father of being involved in her disappearance. On Friday, they asked, for the first time, to get immediate custody of the boys, ages 4 and 6.

"The time has come where we have to stop playing cat and mouse games: Josh Powell had something to do with the disappearance," said Steve Downing, the family's lawyer, at a custody hearing Friday.

In response, Josh Powell said: "Everything they said is patently false. I am a good father to my sons."

A judge will decide custody after the child welfare agency has time to consider where the boys should be placed.

The two sets of in-laws have been arguing publicly for months, both on sidewalks and in the courts, as investigators have gone from abandoned mines of central Nevada to the remote desert of western Utah looking for clues. Things got so heated last month that a judge ordered Josh Powell and Susan Powell's father to keep 500 feet apart.

All of it exploded Friday, a day after Steven Powell, 61, was arrested and accused of secretly videotaping Susan Powell, other women, and young girls taking baths and sitting on the toilet next door. Susan Powell has been clothed in all of the footage detectives have reviewed so far, but they had seen only 5 to 10 percent of the videos, prosecutor Mark Lindquist said.

Josh Powell and his sons have been living at Steven Powell's house in Puyallup, Wash.

Steven Powell pleaded not guilty at a hearing on Friday. Utah police said the arrest was unrelated to the missing person case. The judge set bail at $200,000 and ordered him not to have contact with the boys.

After the hearing, Denise Cox, Susan Powell's older sister, said she was worried that Steven Powell would easily post bail. She said her sister had been concerned when he made sexual advances. Cox said she believes both son and father were involved in the disappearance.

"I'm just hoping for the day that hopefully Josh will join him," she said.

Josh Powell has been the only named person of interest in the case, but police have not charged him with any crime.

"It's been a long wait and it gets harder every day," she said, as she cried in front of a throng of reporters and TV news cameras.

Also Friday, the elder Powell was fired from his job with Washington state's Corrections Department.

Since 2006, Steven Powell has worked for a division of the department in which inmates learn trades like furniture making, agency spokesman Chad Lewis said. The department said Powell sold classroom furniture built by inmates to Chelan County school districts. Lewis confirmed Powell was terminated because of the charges.

Meanwhile, a Washington state judge issued a permanent injunction Friday barring Josh Powell and his father from further publishing journal pages Susan Powell wrote as a teenager. They claimed the entries depicted a troubled woman. Her family has been fighting their release, saying they were the personal writings of a young girl and had no bearing on her disappearance.

Washington prosecutors said Steven Powell is charged with child pornography possession and 14 felony counts of voyeurism.

They said Utah police investigating Susan Powell's disappearance found "thousands of images of females being videotaped without their knowledge, including Susan Powell," on tapes and disks at his home in an Aug. 25 search.

The videos were found in Steven Powell's bedroom. Prosecutors said the images were of women's buttocks, breasts and included minors. The images included shots of two girls who were as young as 8 and 10 years old at the time, authorities said. They determined that the girls lived near Steven Powell from June 2006 to August 2007.

At Powell's arraignment, prosecutor Grant Blinn said detectives are still going through the seized items, but so far have found more than 1,000 video files. He said it appeared he had been secretly videotaping girls or women for at least 10 years.

"It very clearly shows her concerns were just about Steven Powell," Susan Powell's father said.

Before the hearing, Josh Powell sat at the back of the small courtroom. He was dressed casually and wore his wedding ring. Powell flipped through a thick stack of legal documents. When asked if he had anything to say about his father's arrest, he said, "No."

Josh Powell claims he took the couple's two sons ? then ages 4 and 2 ? on a midnight camping trip in the mountains west of Salt Lake City on Dec. 6, 2009, the night before she was reported missing.

Authorities wrapped up their 12-day search of the desert Friday about 30 miles from where Josh Powell said he went camping that night. At one point, they said they found a "shallow grave" after cadaver dogs alerted them to the spot. But they found no human remains. Charred wood chips discovered in the hole have been sent to a lab for testing.

The search of the Powells' home in Puyallup, Wash., last month came after police wrapped up a search for evidence in a network of abandoned mines outside Ely, Nev.

Around that time in August, Josh Powell and his father went on national television to discuss the case. They claimed Susan Powell was promiscuous, emotionally unstable and suicidal, a claim her family denies. Steven Powell said he had a flirtatious relationship with his daughter-in-law and believed they were in love. Susan Powell's father, denied the allegations, and said it was Steven Powell who initiated unwanted sexual advances.

For now, Susan Powell's family is worried about her sons. They have not been allowed to see them since mid-July.

"We're very concerned for the welfare of our grandchildren. We're doing everything we can," Chuck Cox said after the custody hearing.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? A 6-ton NASA satellite on a collision course with Earth clung to space Friday, apparently flipping position in its ever-lower orbit and stalling its death plunge.

The old research spacecraft was targeted to crash through the atmosphere sometime Friday night or early Saturday, putting Canada, Africa and Australia in the potential crosshairs, although most of the satellite should burn up during re-entry. The United States wasn't entirely out of the woods; the possible strike zone skirted Washington state.

"It just doesn't want to come down," said Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

McDowell said the satellite's delayed demise demonstrates how unreliable predictions can be. That said, "the best guess is that it will still splash in the ocean, just because there's more ocean out there."

Until Friday, increased solar activity was causing the atmosphere to expand and the 35-foot, bus-size satellite to free fall more quickly. But late Friday morning, NASA said the sun was no longer the major factor in the rate of descent and that the satellite's position, shape or both had changed by the time it slipped down to a 100-mile orbit.

"In the last 24 hours, something has happened to the spacecraft," said NASA orbital debris scientist Mark Matney.

On Friday night, NASA said it expected the satellite to come crashing down between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. EDT. It will be passing over the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans at that time, as well as Canada, Africa and Australia.

"The risk to public safety is very remote," NASA said in a statement.

The Aerospace Corp., which tracks space debris, estimated the strike would happen sometime between about 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. EDT, which would make a huge difference in where the debris falls. Those late-night, early morning passes showed the satellite flying over parts of the United States.

But NASA stressed its predictions had almost all of the U.S. in the clear ? with Washington state the lone holdout.

Any surviving wreckage is expected to be limited to a 500-mile swath.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, will be the biggest NASA spacecraft to crash back to Earth, uncontrolled, since the post-Apollo 75-ton Skylab space station and the more than 10-ton Pegasus 2 satellite, both in 1979.

Russia's 135-ton Mir space station slammed through the atmosphere in 2001, but it was a controlled dive into the Pacific.

Some 26 pieces of the UARS satellite ? representing 1,200 pounds of heavy metal ? are expected to rain down somewhere. The biggest surviving chunk should be no more than 300 pounds.

Earthlings can take comfort in the fact that no one has ever been hurt by falling space junk ? to anyone's knowledge ? and there has been no serious property damage. NASA put the chances that somebody somewhere on Earth would get hurt at 1-in-3,200. But any one person's odds of being struck were estimated at 1-in-22 trillion, given there are 7 billion people on the planet.

"Keep in mind that we have bits of debris re-entering the atmosphere every single day," Matney said in brief remarks broadcast on NASA TV.

In any case, finders definitely aren't keepers.

Any surviving wreckage belongs to NASA, and it is against the law to keep or sell even the smallest piece. There are no toxic chemicals on board, but sharp edges could be dangerous, so the space agency is warning the public to keep hands off and call police.

The $740 million UARS was launched in 1991 from space shuttle Discovery to study the atmosphere and the ozone layer. At the time, the rules weren't as firm for safe satellite disposal; now a spacecraft must be built to burn up upon re-entry or have a motor to propel it into a much higher, long-term orbit.

NASA shut UARS down in 2005 after lowering its orbit to hurry its end. A potential satellite-retrieval mission was ruled out following the 2003 shuttle Columbia disaster, and NASA did not want the satellite hanging around orbit posing a debris hazard.

Space junk is a growing problem in low-Earth orbit. More than 20,000 pieces of debris, at least 4 inches in diameter, are being tracked on a daily basis. These objects pose a serious threat to the International Space Station.

Lectins interact with certain cells and give toxic substances opportunity to travel to other parts of the body, including the joints. To those who are genetically susceptible, this may result in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A common food trigger for RA sufferers is wheat, with is high in lectins.

Obesity and Metabolic Diseases

Certain diseases have increased dramatically since the introduction of agriculture. These are commonly referred to as diseases of civilization. Communities that did not adopt agricultural diets (i.e., hunter-gatherers), are rarely, if ever, stricken with these illnesses. High-lectin foods, such as wheat and beans, are main ingredients of an agricultural diet.

Leptin is a hormone that signals the brain to stop eating and also manages fat cells. It has been suggested that lectin consumption may lead to leptin resistance. When someone is leptin resistant the brain fails to send a message to the brain that the body is full, which results in overeating.

How Do We Avoid the Damaging Effects of Lectin?

Lectins are present in almost everything we eat, no matter what sort of diet we choose. There are ways of limiting their harmful effects:

• Allow some variety in your diet. In lab experiments with mice, a varied diet caused less intestinal injury than one that included only high-lectin meals (2).
• Abstain from foods that are high in lectins, like wheat and soy.
• Cook, ferment, or sprout. Although lectins may be heat-resistant, they can be reduced through cooking. Sourdough has been shown to inhibit lectin activity, illustrating the helpful nature of probiotics in fermentation.
• Keep your gut strong by supplementing with healthy bacteria. Probiotic supplements or fermented vegetables will help alleviate damage and fight toxins.

HBT: Dodgers' Kershaw simply owns the Giants

Clayton Kershaw has 20 wins this year. Five of them have come against the arch-rival Giants. Four of them have come when Tim Lincecum was going for San Francisco. In short, he has crushed his enemies, has seen them driven before him, and has heard the lamentation of their women.

Last night was no different. He allowed one run on six hits over?seven and a third. ?He has done his fair share to stay in ? and maybe take a slight lead ? in the three-man race for the NL Cy Young award. ?Yes, his 2.27 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 242/53 K/BB ratio in 226 innings keeps him very close to Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, but his 20 wins on a weak team may give voters something to grab onto in the near-impossible task of differentiating these guys.

As for Lincecum, he has had quite a bad bit of luck this year. Against Kershaw this season he has an 0-3 record, but a 1.24 ERA.?Someone may look at his 13-13 record and ask ?what?s wrong with Timmy,? but the first thing that needs to be said about that is that?Lincecum?got zero or one run of support in 11 of those losses. Overall he?s been a better pitcher this year than he was last year.

The wins just tell a different story. One that says more about the Giants? offense ? and a man named Kershaw ? than they do about Lincecum himself.

Dugard sues US over failure to monitor abductor

SAN FRANCISCO?? Jaycee Dugard sued the federal government Thursday for failing to monitor the convicted sex offender who kidnapped her and held her captive for 18 years.

The complaint filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco said the mistakes by federal parole officers in the handling of Phillip Garrido's case are as "outrageous and inexcusable as they are numerous."

Had federal parole officers done their jobs, Dugard's lawyers allege, Dugard and her daughters would not have had to endure their years of captivity in a ramshackle compound tucked inside Garrido's Antioch backyard.

Garrido, who was convicted in 1977 of raping and kidnapping a 25-year-old woman, was on parole and under federal supervision when he kidnapped Dugard in 1991. He fathered Dugard's two children while he and his wife, Nancy, held her captive. The pair was been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping and rape charges in the case.

The complaint alleges that the federal government's negligence allowed Garrido to be free to kidnap Dugard. The complaint said federal authorities were aware he was still dangerous yet failed to revoke his parole and send him back to prison.

Charles Miller, a spokesman at the U.S. Department of Justice, said government attorneys will review the complaint once they are served, and "make a determination about how we will ultimately respond in court."

The complaint lists a number of incidences of alleged misconduct by federal authorities from failing to get Garrido proper mental health treatment to not providing adequate information to state authorities when he was transferred to their charge.

It says Garrido tested positive for drugs and alcohol while on parole, a violation for a sex offender, but was never punished. It also says authorities ignored reports of sexual misconduct, including a complaint that Garrido showed up at his former victim's work and made an "alarming" comment to her.

"Inexplicably, the federal parole authorities responsible for Garrido's direct supervision disregarded the victim's concerns as mere hysteria," the documents say.

After the incident, Garrido's counselor recommended electronic monitoring, but his parole officer disregarded it as "too much of a hassle," according to the complaint.

The documents also allege federal parole officers did not follow up on a sexual harassment complaint by one of Garrido's co-workers.

"With this type of resume, it is hard to imagine that Garrido, a parolee classified as 'High Activity' supervision, would have received anything other than the utmost scrutiny and supervision by federal parole authorities," the complaint says. "Garrido, however, received nothing of the sort."

The documents say authorities went several months without checking on him and visited his residence less than a dozen times in the 10 years they supervised him.

"Had federal parole authorities demonstrated a modicum of vigilance ... Jaycee and her daughters would not have been forced to endure a virtual lifetime of physical and mental abuse," the lawyers said.

Dugard is seeking unspecified damages from the federal complaint that she says she will donate to her nonprofit organization to help other victims.

She and her daughters already have received a $20 million settlement from the state of California for the failings of its law enforcement. The state took over Garrido's parole supervision in 1999.

Dugard, who was kidnapped when she was 11 years old, was reunited with her family in August 2009.

As use of the Internet continues to grow geometrically, we see an increased demand for information to be provided by a variety of media. Viewing options can range from simple text to PDF documents to video clips. Unfortunately, each option requires more and more resources and technological know-how. As convergence moves inexorably forward, we have to ask ourselves if there is a practical way to combine the best of this technology and still provide the user with a satisfying Internet experience.

The answer, at this stage of Internet evolution, is audio.

Voice, by itself, provides the means to enhance a user?s enjoyment of the Internet. Voice conveys many of the intangibles underlying the written word. A voice can touch the human spirit and deliver a message on its? own merits. Audio can build community and maintain relationships.

Audio is the most mature of the streaming technologies and doesn?t have the bandwidth requirements associated with video. Any Internet user connecting at 28.8k or better can enjoy FM quality sound without experiencing buffering and other annoyances that can affect video at lower bit rates.

It is common knowledge that people only retain 20% of what they read, but they do remember 70% of what they see and hear. That fact in itself increases the value of an audio message delivered from a website for the typical user. And, the implications of how audio can increase Internet enjoyment for the handicapped are overwhelming.

Streaming audio provides Internet businesses with unlimited opportunities to reach their audience and to simplify their interactions. Streaming audio broadens a product?s appeal and helps to stimulate sales. People are comfortable with audio and have few qualms about using it in their day-to-day lives.

Retailers can integrate audio into their operations in several ways. Use it to enhance product descriptions and deliver product information in ways far more persuasive than plain text. Booksellers can have ?special events? that offer audio excerpts from selected titles. Art dealers can use voice to give value added information on an artist or a period of history depicted by an artist?s work. (Think of those audio tours that museums offer.)

Organizations that specialize in selling educational tools can use audio clips for potential clients to preview and evaluate the material being offered. The ability to sample the product is a potent and practical selling aid.

Business-to-Business sites and corporate Intranets can also harness the power of audio. The need to provide up-to-the-minute information for employees and customers can be well served with streaming audio and the telephone. Integrating audio into the corporate communications mix is a tool that is easy to use and addresses the need to communicate with a distributed work force.

In both the retail and business-to-business marketplace, audio can and should be used to maintain those all important customer relationships. Voice messages add a personal touch that intrigues the listener and encourages them to remain on the site.

Employee training is greatly enhanced with audio. Use it to orient new employees and keep the information archived on the site for easy reference. Sales training can also be archived and quickly retrieved when needed. The ability to offer customized audio training materials on a 24/7 basis makes streaming audio a very versatile and efficient learning tool.

Some words of caution are also necessary. Audio, just like any other value-added technology, has to be used judiciously. It should be employed for a specific purpose and to enhance the text based message being delivered. Think of your audience and how you?d like them to interact with your website. Keep in mind that your visitor may be coming to your site while they?re at their place of business and plan accordingly.

The future of streaming audio is bright and filled with promise. More and more Internet users have become familiar with streaming audio and use it everyday. Internet radio broadcasts are extremely popular and are now being employed as effective advertising vehicles. Audio e-mail messaging is becoming widely available and is being positioned as a practical business tool. Consumers are attaching audio messages to greeting cards and experimenting with Internet telephony. Streaming audio will allow the average Internet user the ability to create content that conveys the power of voice and the emotions that it conveys.
