Androids Dream of Electric Malware, Wake Up in Cold Sweat

Google has had to pull Android out of another malware nightmare. A variation on the so-called DroidDream malware that appeared weeks ago sprang up again within dozens of app in the Android Market, which Google has now yanked off the shelves. The incident has led to more questions about whether Google should -- or can -- change its vetting process for Android Market apps.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has reportedly pulled several Android mobile applications that were lousy with malware from its official Android Market.

This follows a report earlier this week from Lookout Mobile Security, which claimed it found dozens of apps in the market that contained malicious code.

The suspect apps appear to be from the same developers who created DroidDream, the malware that hit Google in early March and was also discovered by Lookout.

However, the new malware payload appears to be a stripped-down version of DroidDream, which Lookout has christened "DroidDream Light."

The latest malware attack has claimed between 30,000 and 120,000 victims, the mobile security firm estimates.

Like in the first incident, the list of infected applications in this latest attack includes apps with sexy names such as "HOT Girl 4" and "Sex Sound: Japanese," as well as seemingly useful apps such as "System Monitor," "System Info Manager," "Quick Uninstaller," "Brightness Settings" and "Volume Manager."

"The Android Market allows developers to upload apps without first running them through an established screening process like those you might find at Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) App Store or when using RIM's applications for BlackBerry," Fred Touchette, senior security analyst at AppRiver, told LinuxInsider.

"We do test apps, which Google doesn't, and that's one of the benefits of shopping at our Android app store," Anya Waring, spokesperson for Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) Electronics, pointed out.

Google did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

How DroidDream Light Works

The malicious components of DroidDream Light (DDLight) don't need the victim to launch them; they can spring into action when, for example, there's an incoming call.

Once a call comes in, the broadcast receiver launches the "lightdd.CoreService" package. This will contact remote servers and send out information about the device to those servers, Lookout said.

DDLight apparently can also download new packages and prompt the user to install them. However, unlike its predecessor, DroidDream, it requires the user's involvement for the installation, Lookout said.

The Never-Ending Droid Nightmare

This latest attack is the second on the Android Market since March.

The earlier attack, which launched the original DroidDream malware, forced Google to remove about 50 tainted apps from the market.

Android smartphone users should expect more attacks. McAfee's Q1 threat report warned that Symbian and Android are the most popular environments for mobile malware, and that attacks against mobile devices are growing.

Protect Yourself at All Times

Users should first prevent the installation of applications without their knowledge, Stephen Gates, director of field engineering at Top Layer, told LinuxInsider.

They can do this by unchecking the "Unknown Sources" field in the "Settings/Applications" menu, Gates said.

Users should also always check the reviews associated with apps they download, whether these are paid or free apps, Gates suggested.

When a user installs an app, Android will indicate the permissions the app wants to access. If any of them seem questionable, don't download the app, Gates stated.

Users whose devices are infected should download an antivirus application such as Lookout and ensure it remains updated, Gates said.

Android device users should also not access any password-protected site when they are connected to an unsecured WiFi hotspot, AppRiver's Touchette suggested.

In addition, when users get an SMS or a voicemail message that seems to have been sent by their bank or another such institution, they should call the organization directly to confirm whether it had tried to contact them instead of responding directly, Touchette said.

Steps Google Might Take

Perhaps Google might be able to protect users better if it followed Amazon's lead and checked applications before letting them be published to the Android Market.

Amazon tests every app submitted to its Android app store for malware and functionality, and it usually turns around the apps within a week, company spokesperson Waring said.

"Google could do a better job of vetting applications prior to allowing them to be posted to the market," Top Layer's Gates agreed.

However, there are "thousands upon thousands of applications available on the market, and to be honest, is it really Google's job anyway?" Gates asked.

The cost of pre-vetting could be "astronomical," and Google would have to charge either the app developer or the customer , Gates said. The process for vetting every Android app submitted to Google would also be "extremely complex," he added.

By the end of April, the Google Android Market had nearly 300,000 apps, and this number is expected to increase to 425,000 by the end of August, according to Research 2 Guidance.

Amazon Electronics, on the other hand has about 11,000 Android apps, spokesperson Waring said.

"My suggestion for Google is to force the application writers to perform the due diligence themselves," Gates said.

Security Boffins Smell Phish in Hotmail, Yahoo

The recent round of spear phishing suffered by a few hundred high-profile Gmail users might not be limited to Google's mail service. Trend Micro says it's seeing similar goings-on in other popular public email systems like Yahoo Mail and Hotmail. The company says there are significant similarities in the attacks, though it's unknown whether they're directly related.

Gmail is not the only e-mail service whose users have been targeted by spear-phishing hackers. Users at Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO) Mail and Hotmail are also on the email infiltrators' hit lists, according to security firm Trend Micro (Nasdaq: TMIC).

The attacks on the latter two email systems appear to be separately conducted, said Nart Villeneuve, senior threat researcher at Trend Micro. However, they contain significant similarities with the recently seen attacks on Gmail users.

Earlier this week, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) disclosed that some of its Gmail users' accounts had been breached by hackers using highly targeted spear phishing methods to gain access to and spy on their email exchanges. Though the list of victims is relatively short, Google claims it includes high-profile individuals like government officials, journalists and Chinese human rights activists.

As a method of stealing personal information, spear phishing has been going on for quite some time.

"These attacks occur all the time," Rod Rasmussen, president and chief technology officer of Internet Identity, told TechNewsWorld.

"It would have been shocking if Gmail was the only email system targeted by this kind of attack," Mike Paquette, chief strategy officer at Top Layer, remarked.

Phishing attacks and other forms of abuse are "a persistent industry challenge," John Scarrow, general manager of Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Safety Services, told TechNewsWorld.

So far, only Google has apparently made a public complaint, in which it also claims the hacks originated in China, kicking off a war of words between the Washington and Beijing.

However, the identity and origin of the attackers may not be easy to pinpoint accurately.

"It's not difficult for the attackers to mask their true location and appear to be coming from locations in other countries," Nart Villeneuve, a senior threat researcher at Trend Micro, pointed out.

Phishing attacks and other forms of abuse are "a persistent industry challenge," John Scarrow, general manager of Microsoft Safety Services, told TechNewsWorld.

Google and Yahoo did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

About the Gmail Attack

Google has previously said the latest attack hijacked hundreds of users' Gmail accounts through spear phishing.

Spear phishing is a targeted attack in which users are lured to click on a link embedded in an email or an attachment to an email with a subject line that may be of interest to the victim. Rather than the vague and general information contained in a typical phishing email scam, spear phishers use information specific to the victim in order to gain that person's trust.

In some cases, the subject line appears to be work-related; in others, it appears to be from a friend or a courier company such as Federal Express, or it could be salacious -- whatever works, in other words.

"Targeted emails that tempt a user to click a hyperlink are among the most prevalent methods of infecting computers with malware or of stealing information," Top Layer's Paquette told TechNewsWorld.

This is not the first attack on Gmail users; back in March, Google blogged about an attack using an MHTML vulnerability. This vulnerability let attackers load up a malicious document that could execute JavaScript into MHTML.

MHTML is a container format that uses MIME encapsulation to combine several documents into a single file. It's used by Internet Explorer, which had the MHTML vulnerability.

Attacks on Yahoo and Hotmail

Users of the Hotmail and Yahoo Mail services were also targeted by phishing attacks, Trend Micro's Villeneuve told TechNewsWorld.

In the case of Yahoo Mail, the attackers sent an email that contained two attachments, Villeneuve disclosed.

One was a malicious document and the other an unsuccessful cross-site scripting exploit attempt designed to steal the user's Yahoo Mail cookie in order to access the user's account, Villeneuve stated. However, the attacker's code "did not function correctly," he said.

Microsoft sidestepped the question of whether or not Hotmail account holders had been spear-phished.

"Microsoft is not aware of any Hotmail customers being targeted by the specific phishing attacks that occurred earlier this week," Scarrow said.

Attackers can expect no mercy from Redmond.

"We actively prosecute malicious entities that violate the law through spam, phishing and other attacks," Scarrow said.

Practicing Safe Email Access

Attacking people's personal webmail accounts may give hackers access to vital information.

Many people check their personal webmail accounts at work, which lets attackers gain information about the target to use in later attacks, Villeneuve said.

People who check their personal webmail accounts from their office computers also open the door to attackers gaining information about the network the user is on, through tactics such as using the "res://" protocol, and using that information in later attacks, Villeneuve stated.

To minimize the threat from such email attacks, users should use a multi-step login process, IID's Rasmussen said. Google suggests consumers use both a password and another proof of identity such as their phone number, although that might open up new vectors for attack.

Consumers should also change their passwords regularly; use different passwords for their different accounts; check their email settings, especially those for forwarding; and assume the bad guys have broken into their accounts and search for evidence of this "every once in a while," Rasmussen stated.

"Phishing attacks are becoming more targeted," Top Layer's Paquette pointed out. "Unless you've requested the hyperlink, don't click on it," he warned.

It's not easy for enterprises and government agencies to harden their email systems so that compromised emails don't infect the IT infrastructure, Top Layer's Paquette said.

"The compromised website may be so new that there's no way for the email system to know in advance that it's malicious," Paquette pointed out.

However, there are other technologies organizations can use, such as network intrusion prevention systems, that stop the attack even after an infected email has been opened, Paquette said.

Chrysler To Sever U.S. Government Ties

Chrysler Group LLC, newly profitable and confident in its revamped products, will soon sever its ties with the U.S. government.

Italian automaker Fiat SpA agreed late Thursday to buy the U.S. Treasury's 6 percent interest in Chrysler for $500 million. Once the deal closes, the government will no longer hold a stake in the auto company. Treasury officials said it could take up to three months to make sure the agreement meets regulatory approvals, but it will likely close more quickly than that.

President Obama is expected to announce the agreement Friday during a trip to a Chrysler facility in Toledo, Ohio.

The deal means the U.S. government won't get back the full $12.5 billion in bailout loans it gave Chrysler from the end of 2008 through Chrysler's bankruptcy in the summer of 2009. The Treasury Department said Thursday that Chrysler has repaid $11.2 billion, but it is unlikely to recover $1.3 billion.

But government officials have long said that they didn't expect to recover the full amount they loaned to Chrysler and General Motors Co. during the auto industry downturn, and that their top priority was saving thousands of auto jobs.

"We didn't do this to maximize return. We did it to save jobs," Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said during a trip to Detroit in April.

Fiat also agreed to pay $75 million for the right to purchase the Chrysler shares held by a trust for retired autoworkers. The Treasury will receive 80 percent of those proceeds, or $60 million, while the government of Canada will get $15 million. The trust holds a 47 percent stake in the company.

The deal will give Fiat a majority 52 percent stake in the automaker just two years after it agreed to manage Chrysler after its bankruptcy.

Chrysler has made a remarkable turnaround. Before entering bankruptcy proceedings, the automaker was nearly out of cash and needed U.S. government money to survive. The company made a first-quarter net profit of $116 million and is forecasting 2011 earnings of $200 million to $500 million.

Under the leadership of Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, the company has cut costs and revived its sales by refurbishing most of its lineup of Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and Ram vehicles. Sales of the Jeep Grand Cherokee were nearly three times higher in May than in the same month a year ago.

Fiat's stake is likely to rise to 57 percent before the end of the year, when Chrysler meets another milestone set by the U.S. government: Producing a 40 mpg small car in the U.S. All told, Fiat has the right to purchase more than 70 percent of Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler.

For the first time in more than two years, all sectors of the server market have posted year-over-year growth in the same quarter (Q1 2011), representing aggregate growth of 12.1 percent to $11.9 billion. This indicates a significant loosening of the corporate purse strings as it relates to server infrastructure purchases.

However, there were several interesting observations below the fold that may signal a significant shift in the enterprise storage and network infrastructure spheres. Chief among them is the significant uptick in the x86-based blade market -- nearly doubling the revenue growth figures posted by the server market as a whole. In fact, over 20 percent of investments made in x86 server hardware went to blades.

With more than 50 percent of the blade server market, HP's c-Class blade offerings have remained very popular. However, readers who have always thought of Cisco as a networking company may be shocked to realize that increasing demand for Cisco's UCS blade platform has moved the company to third place with a tad less than 10 percent of the market share -- a fairly amazing feat given how little time UCS has been on the market. However, it should be noted that Cisco's introductory pricing on UCS has been fantastically aggressive, so it will be interesting to see if it can keep up this pace as time goes on.

Part and parcel to all but the smallest blade deployment is heavy use of network convergence. Buying a high-density blade chassis only to then equip it with a multitude of pass-through modules and do the network aggregation somewhere else rarely makes sense, either financially or from an operational management standpoint. The fewer external network ports you end up burning and the less hardware you need, the better. As a result, many organizations' first experience with network convergence, or maybe even 10Gbps networking, also happens to be when they bought their first blade chassis.

Sadly, Intel wouldn't give the names of the ODMs behind its own reference tablets, so your guess is just as good as ours.

With the exception of the Gingerbread-powered Foxconn slate, these were all running on Honeycomb 3.0.1 OS -- well, we say running, but just barely. As you'll see in our hands-on video after the break, most of the devices were struggling to keep up with the launcher animation, and needless to say, Intel wasn't keen on letting us test video playback on them. We also noticed that Android Market was missing on the prototypes, but Intel assured us that it'll be available on the final products, and that current Android apps are already supported by Oak Trail. In terms of build quality it left much to be desired, though this is forgivable at a trade show; it's the software that we're concerned with. From what we've seen here at Computex, Android on Oak Trail is far from ready, so it'll be interesting to see if Acer can actually pull off a July launch for its rumored Oak Trail Honeycomb tablet.

Book Review: A History of Apologetics by Avery Cardinal Dulles ...

The newly revised and expanded 2005 edition of Avery Dulles? book A History of Apologetics (first published in 1971) is arguably the most substantial of its kind (see part 1). Last week, I summarized each of the book?s seven chapters. Today I will close this review with my thoughts on the book.

Strengths
All in all, Dulles? work is an impressive piece of scholarship and possesses many qualities appealing to those interested in Christian apologetics.

1. Dulles does a masterful job of succinctly summarizing the life, key writings, and apologetic concerns and arguments of dozens of major and minor Christian apologists. He evaluates the apparent strengths and weaknesses of the various apologists fairly. This evaluation often includes an analysis of the apologists? theological and philosophical sophistication, the logical coherence of their arguments, their exegetical skill, originality, writing style and tone, and sometimes even their Christian character. On occasion, Dulles also summarizes the works and basic arguments of some of Christianity?s foremost critics (e.g., Celsius, Porphyry, Julian, Averroes, Voltaire, Immanuel Kant, etc.).

2. The sheer number of thinkers Dulles carefully surveys is impressive. Readers will be exposed to virtually all of Christianity?s important apologists, though, obviously, with necessary brevity.

3. Dulles effectively surveys the various historical eras and in so doing, identifies central apologetics themes as well as evaluates strategy, development, and success. He notes how the apologetics enterprise evolved, depending upon the challenging cultural and intellectual zeitgeist (spirit of the age). This book would serve well in a Christian course on the history of ideas or on philosophy of religion.

4. For the most part, Dulles writes in a readable style and breaths life into obscure figures of the past. This is especially true of his handling of the ancient church fathers. Though dealing with a lot of technical material, Dulles keeps up a pretty good pace so lay readers will not get bogged down or overwhelmed (though the first three chapters are more readable than the last three).

5. This book provides a rich resource of excellent notes, bibliographical information, and indexes.

Weaknesses
The book?s biggest drawback is its brevity. It covers so much ground that it can only briefly introduce certain people and topics. Nevertheless, Dulles does a very good job of exposing readers to the critical thinkers and issues.

Another minor weakness is that, while Dulles usually works quite hard at being objective and even-handed, his commitment to Catholicism does show through at times (but then again whose wouldn?t) in his evaluation of various apologetics methods and conclusions. Worse still for conservative evangelicals, however, is that his criticism of several ancient apologists? defense of Scripture is tainted by his own acceptance of certain higher critical theories concerning the Bible (e.g., his rejection of the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch and, no doubt, his late dating of various Old Testament books).

But regardless of these difficulties, A History of Apologetics is an outstanding treatment of Christian apologetics history by an insightful and fair-minded scholar. Every serious student of apologetics should study the content of this book and discover just how much the masters of the past have to teach the apologists of today.
