Microscope probe-sharpening technique improves resolution, durability

ScienceDaily (July 6, 2012) ? A simple new improvement to an essential microscope component could greatly improve imaging for researchers who study the very small, from cells to computer chips.

Joseph Lyding, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois, led a group that developed a new microscope probe-sharpening technique. The technique is described in research published this week in the journal Nature Communications.

Scanning probe microscopes provide images of tiny structures with high resolution at the atomic scale. The tip of the probe skims the surface of a sample to measure mechanical, electrical or chemical properties. Such microscopes are widely used among researchers who work with tiny structures in fields from nanotechnology to cellular biology.

Labs can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an elegant instrument -- for example, a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) or an atomic force microscope (AFM) -- yet the quality of the data depends on the probe. Probes can degrade rapidly with use, wearing down and losing resolution. In such cases, the researcher then has to stop the scan and replace the tip.

"To put it in perspective, if you had an expensive racecar but you put bicycle tires on it, it wouldn't be a very good car," Lyding said.

To shape tips, researchers shoot a stream of ions at the tip. The material sputters off as the ions collide with the tip, whittling away the probe. One day in the lab, after yet another tip failure, Lyding had the simple, novel idea of applying a matching voltage to the tip to deflect the incoming ions. When a voltage is applied to a sharp object, the electrical field gets stronger as the point narrows. Therefore, ions approaching the sharpest part of the electrified tip are deflected the most.

"This causes the ions to remove the material around that sharp part, not on the sharp part itself, and that makes it sharper," Lyding said. "You preserve the point and you sharpen what's around it."

Lyding and graduate student Scott Schmucker purchased an inexpensive ion gun and tested Lyding's idea. It worked beautifully. STM tips with a starting radius of 100 nanometers were honed to a sharp 1-nanometer point, yielding extremely high resolution. In addition, the sputtering process works with any electrically conductive material.

But once the probes are ultra-sharp, what's to keep them from wearing down just as quickly as other probes? Lyding and Schmucker then teamed with U. of I. chemistry professor Gregory Girolami and materials science and engineering professor John Abelson, whose groups had demonstrated coatings for silicon semiconductors made of a material called hafnium diboride. The coatings are 10 times harder than the metal usually used to make STM tips, but are also metallic -- the key property for the ion-sputtering process.

The group applied the hafnium diboride coatings to their probes, sputtered them further, and found that the resulting probes are stable, durable and excel in the types of microscopy and patterning applications for which such tips are used.

"Nobody else makes probes with the combination of sharp, hard and metallic conduction," said Lyding, who is also affiliated with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the U. of I. "You can find one or the other but not all three. There's a tremendous demand for that."

The researchers now are moving to commercialize their tough, sharp probes. They received a patent and started a company called Tiptek to begin manufacture. They are also expanding their sharpening technique to include AFM probes as well as STM, and are developing batch-processing techniques for higher throughput.

"When people make AFM tips they make them on wafers, hundreds of tips at a time," said Lyding. "The methodology that we're developing lets us process this entire wafer as a unit so all 400 tips would be done at the same time."

The Office of Naval Research, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency and the National Science Foundation supported this work.

How to Find a Full Service Dentist in Your ... - Health and Fitness

It?s hard enough to find a dentist you like at all. So finding a practice that does pediatrics, cosmetics, periodontal, and has nice receptionists would be incredible. Full service dental practices are quite common now. If you can find one you like, your family will be set up for life.

In Columbus, OH, there are great dentists spread across the city, but driving all over town for different specialists can be maddening. If you live in New Albany, you can find a practice for New Albany family dentistry that will cover everyone. This doesn?t mean finding a dental jack of all trades. The key is finding multiple dentists in the same office with complimentary specialties. At Clark Family Dental in New Albany, the husband and wife team covers a variety of specialties.

What benefit would a highly skilled specialist gain from working in a full service dental office? A good Boston implant dentist could find plenty of business on his own. But at Dental Partners of Boston, dentists of various specialties can consult on how best to care for patients. They coordinate to prioritize work needed as well. This results in better overall service for patients in quality of care and convenience.

Don?t think you have to sacrifice personal relationships in a full service practice. A two dentist Madison, WI practice can meet just about all your family?s dental needs with one staff who will remember you because you?ll be in more frequently. Oak Park dental offers a wide variety of services between the two doctors. This means for most procedures, you only deal with doctors and hygienists you know and trust. The receptionists will know your insurance so you won?t have to fill out paperwork every time you come in. Having a good relationships with doctors in a single practice will give them better insight into new problems because they will have your full history in front of them and will be able to talk to others who have done work on your teeth in person.

Wherever you live, if you can find a full service dental practice you can trust and enjoy visiting, it will be amazing how much stress you won?t have to deal with.

Five Inexpensive Upgrades to Improve Your Home's Appearance ...

Whether you want to add new life to your home or are looking to sell, making simple home improvements can make a big difference in the overall comfort and appeal of any house. Many home improvement projects, such as cabinet resurfacing, are relatively inexpensive and are easy to complete. The following five projects can be completed without the help of work crews. All of these simple fixes will improve the appearance of your home and can help boost home value.

Add molding. Many newer homes are built without decorative molding, which can add a finished look to almost any room. A wide variety of decorative molding styles are available for purchase at home improvement stores. Molding is inexpensive and is very easy to install. You can easily add molding to your home over the course of a day.

Repaint main rooms. This is one of the simplest home improvement fixes around, but it is also one of the most valuable. If you?re trying to sell your home, repainting the main rooms is essential. If you don?t have a strong sense of color, consider hiring an interior designer to advise you on color choices.

Resurface cabinets. The kitchen is generally considered the most important room in the house. It receives a high level of traffic and serves as a hub for the whole family. You can easily spruce-up the appearance of your kitchen by resurfacing your cabinets. Cabinet resurfacing is relatively easy and is much cheaper than buying new cabinets.

Update lighting. Every homeowner knows that lighting is essential. You can easily change the entire look and feel of a room by adding or updating lighting. The more light you add to a room, the larger it will look. It?s also a great idea to use small accent lights to highlight a piece of art or funky mirror.

Add curb appeal. The front of your house is the first thing potential buyers will see. In order to attract the eyes of buyers, make sure that your lawn is clean-cut and that shrubs are placed artfully throughout your yard. A dark-colored mulch looks great when set off by bright, beautiful flowers.

Improving the overall appearance and value of your home doesn?t need to be difficult or time-consuming. Instead of hiring a crew of workers or taking out a loan, consider making these five simple home improvements. With an investment of a little time and effort, any homeowner can make these simple fixes.

Church gutted by flames; fireworks may be to blame

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (WSVN) -- A church is now charred after flames engulfed the place of worship on the Fourth of July.

The fire broke out at The Pilgrim Evangelical Church along Northwest 119th Street and 12th Avenue, at around 4:30 p.m.

The pastor, Reverend James Pestuerin, said witnesses told him that a group of kids were on top of the church's roof, lighting fireworks, when the fire suddenly broke out. "Some kids were playing on the roof of the building, and [witnesses] told me [the kids were playing with] firecrackers," said Pestuerin. "They set the fire, and when the fire was set, they ran. That's what the neighbors told me."

The pastor said when he received the call about the fire, he rushed to the church, and could even see the flames before he arrived to the place of worship.

A 7News viewer sent video of firefighters as they battled the intense blaze. The fire was put out, but what remained was a total mess.

The church is now a complete loss. Pastor Pestuerin says the place of worship does not have insurance, but despite the fire, they will still have service on Sunday. "I believe we're going to be in the parking lot under a tent for now. That's what I guess we have to do," he said.

The church was anticipating celebrating several special events in the coming weeks. "We have a revival that's going to start in two weeks," Pestuerin said, "and the anniversary of the church, we were about to celebrate: 19 years of existence."

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the westbound lanes of 119th Street, near 12th Avenue, will be shut down until 10 a.m. Thursday.

The exact cause of the fire is still unknown, but the state fire marshal is investigating.

HTC Q2 2012 financials show 57.8 percent fall in net profits

Android Central

HTC has announced its unaudited second quarter financial results this morning, showing earnings in line with its previous Q2 earnings guidance, which had been revised down. In stark contrast to Samsung's record profits, From March to June, HTC generated revenues of NT$91.0 billion (~$3.04 billion), while net income after tax was NT$7.4 billion (~$247 million). This represents a 57.8 percent fall from the second quarter of 2011, during which HTC raked in a net income of NT$17.52 billion (~$586 million).

HTC's had a rough time financially over the past six months, due to strong smartphone competition from the likes of Samsung and Apple. In its earlier revenue guidance, the manufacturer blamed the lower-than-expected profits on lackluster European sales, as well as trouble getting some HTC One phones past customs in the U.S.

Smart headlights make rain and snow disappear

    7 hrs.

Smart headlights are under development that reduce glare from falling rain and snow, making driving in nasty weather a bit less stressful.

The system uses a digital projector to illuminate raindrops at the top of the field of view for a few milliseconds as a processor predicts their path and switch off light rays that would normally hit the drops.

The result is a slightly dimmer headlight, but one that blocks out so?much glare from falling rain and snow that visibility improves.

The entire process from capture to reaction takes 13 milliseconds, explains Carnegie Mellon University?s Illumination and Imaging lab where proof-of-concept headlights have been tested.

While the lab prototype demonstrates the feasibility of the system, it will be a while before our cars come equipped with the technology.?

For example, the team needs to get the system working in a moving vehicle in the real world as well make their prediction algorithm robust to the effect of wind on rain and snow.?

Then, the team technology must be scaled up for cost-effective integration with cars ? something the researchers believe is possible with cutting-edge LED technology.

For more details on the project, check out the team?s lab page and this paper presented at the IEEE Conference on Computational Photography.

Walsh says opponent talks too much about military service

Posted on: 9:58 pm, July 4, 2012, by Doris Taylor, updated on: 10:32pm, July 4, 2012

    Joe Walsh

(CNN) ? Republican Rep. Joe Walsh of Illinois on Wednesday stood by earlier comments questioning his congressional opponent, an Iraq war veteran and double-amputee, for speaking too much about her military service.

?She is a hero, and that demands our respect, but it doesn?t demand our vote. All she does, guys, is talk about her service,? Walsh said on CNN?s ?The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.?

He contended that his rival, Democrat Tammy Duckworth, rarely makes campaign appearances, but when she does hit the trail, she primarily focuses on her background fighting overseas.

A Black Hawk helicopter pilot in Iraq, Duckworth lost both legs and the use of one arm when her crew was shot down in 2004. She was later awarded the Purple Heart and continues to serve as a lieutenant colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard.

In his original remarks on Sunday, Walsh lauded Sen. John McCain?s modesty in talking about his well-known background as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. Walsh said McCain?s 2008 Republican presidential advisers repeatedly pushed the senator to talk more about his story, but he was strongly reluctant to make that a focus of his campaign.

?That?s what?s so noble about our heroes. Now I?m running against a woman who, my God, that?s all she talks about,? Walsh said. ?Our true heroes, it?s the last thing in the world they talk about. That?s why we?re so indebted and in awe of what they?ve done.?

His comments soon generated buzz online, prompting several groups, including VoteVets.org and Emily?s List, an organization dedicated to helping Democratic women get elected to office, to condemn the congressman?s remarks.

Walsh, elected in 2010 with wide support from the tea party, reiterated Wednesday that he believes Duckworth is a hero but she gives voters a narrow window into her positions on the issues.

?I continue to salute her service, but if that?s all she runs on, voters are going to find that offensive,? he said.

He called into question the very notion that she would discuss her military background, saying ?veterans don?t talk about their service? and choose to be ?private about it.?

When pressed by Blitzer, who said a lot of veterans are proud to discuss their background, Walsh brought up McCain again as an example of one who tends to be more reserved.

?They don?t throw it in your face,? he said. ?They at least can move beyond that and tell you why they want to be a congressman or woman.?

Duckworth?s campaign responded to his original comments on Tuesday, calling the comments an ?insult.?

?This week we celebrate our country?s founding and we are grateful for the courage and service of all of our military men and women throughout our nation?s history. Congressman Walsh?s comments insult those who sacrificed to make this country free. Tammy is proud of her over twenty years of service with the Army and her family?s legacy of fighting for this country. We can?t recognize our servicemen and women enough and ask that we keep them in our thoughts during this holiday week,? campaign manager Kaitlin Fahey said Tuesday in a statement.

Duckworth, herself, said during a Tuesday interview with MSNBC that Walsh was using the attack for his own political gain and called him an ?extremist loudmouth for the tea party.?

This election year marks her second run for Congress. The Iraq war veteran made an unsuccessful House bid in 2006, prior to being tapped by President Barack Obama in 2009 to become the assistant secretary of Veterans Affairs.

The two candidates are fighting for a seat representing the new 8th Congressional District located outside of Chicago and created by the state?s recent redistricting process.

For Mexicans, relief that next president won't have free rein

Pe?a Nieto's win restores power to the PRI, which long held an authoritarian grip on Mexico before being ousted 12 years ago. But more than a decade of democracy has changed things.

Enrique Pe?a Nieto of Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) is the clear victor in?the nation's?presidential race. But the candidate, of the historic Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), won with a much smaller mandate than pollsters had anticipated.

With 94 percent of votes counted, he has about a six-point margin.?Surveys had him anywhere from 10 to 15 points ahead of his nearest rival, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).

?Now Mr. Lopez Obrador, the leftist who famously led a six-week sit-in in downtown Mexico City?to contest the razor-thin defeat in his first presidential bid in 2006, is saying he won't concede defeat.

?No one expects another unpopular protest, but he has said he is waiting until the absolute final results are in to make a statement ? even though Mexican President Felipe Calderon has congratulated Mr. Pe?a Nieto and the National Action Party (PAN) candidate, Josefina Vazquez Mota, promptly stepped down.

For Mexicans worried about what the return of the PRI means for Mexico's democracy, after the PRI ran the country for 71 years as a single party and with an authoritarian grip, this is a welcome sign that Pe?a Nieto won't have an entirely free rein. It is?also unclear that he will have a working majority in Congress, which means the party will have to negotiate hard with the others to push through tough reforms that Pe?a Nieto promised and that Mexico desperately needs.

But there are other reasons that fears should be allayed, say analysts. Mexican voters?shared various opinions about what a PRI ?comback? means, after they were voted out of office in 2000. Some believe the party, with its youthful candidate, has changed; some don't believe in any political class but think the PRI is the best that they've got.

Most Mexicans, however, appear willing to trust their democracy: They might not be sure what the PRI will do once it's in office again, but they do believe that in the 12 years since it has been out, society has changed in dramatic ways. The president no longer holds vast powers. With the opening of its economy, Mexico has also had to open its political system. And from a stronger federal electoral institute to the presence of influential civil society organizations, there is no way the party can get up to its old antics, they say.

?You have more counterbalances,?says Maureen Meyer, Mexico analyst with the?Washington Office on Latin America. ?You have a civil society that has been building its influence. You have stronger political parties in general.?

The PRI ?won?t be able to go back to business as usual,? she adds.

One of the biggest sources of power for the PRI came from its ability to control the vote. In 1988, the party was widely accused of having rigged the elections, after a leftist candidate was coming out front. But in the wake of the outcry the government began the process of overhauling its electoral system, reforms that were strengthened throughout the 90s. By the time the PRI lost in 2000 for the first time, Mexico's?Federal Electoral Institute?(IFE) was considered one of the world's best.

The confidence in the electoral body was tested after Mexico's last presidential election in 2006, when Mr. Lopez Obrador, in his first presidential bid, declared fraud and refused to recognize election results, after losing the race by less than a percentage point. And the feeling that the election was ?stolen? is still strong among Lopez Obrador's supporters.

?Of course the vote was robbed in 2006,? says Hector Galvan, a young resident of?Mexico City?who works in human resources. ?Everything is corruptible here.?

    Google's Nexus Q is secretly a Magic 8 Ball

    8 hrs.

Considering that it's been around since 1950, most of us are familiar with the Magic 8 Ball. It's a simple toy which'll answer "yes" or "no" questions. You can buy one for less than ten bucks.

Alternatively, you could order a?Nexus Q???Google's?shiny new "social streaming device"???for $299, and get your advice from it instead.

You see, it turns out that the Nexus Q has a little easter egg?? a hidden or secret feature?? which can be triggered by tapping the Nexus Q icon in the device's settings?repeatedly. Once you do that, the screen of the tablet or smartphone currently controlling the Nexus Q will display a glowing ball and offer to solve your dilemmas.

Like a real Magic 8 Ball, the Nexus Q???the Magic Q-Ball??? appears to only handle "yes" or "no" questions. Its responses range from a simple "no" or "you betcha" to cheeky claims that it's too tired to deal with your questions right now.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

(AP) ? Unionized workers with Consolidated Edison in New York City will be picketing as their leadership plots their next move following failed contract talks and a lockout.

A union spokesman said Harry Farrell, president of Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America, on Monday will call for federal mediators to intervene to get talks started again.

Both sides said there are many issues on which they have not reached agreement.

Negotiations stopped just before 2 a.m. Sunday, a couple of hours after the existing contract expired. The impasse came as New York braced for more high temperatures that will increase demand for air conditioning among the utility's 3.2 million customers.

On Sunday morning, police set up barricades in front of Con Ed's headquarters near Manhattan's Union Square.

Con Ed closed walk-in centers, suspended meter readings and limited work on major construction projects in New York after the talks broke down.

"This is crazy! There's a heat wave," said David Palomino, a facility mechanic who rushed to headquarters after finishing his early shift to find out what was coming next. He was one of few workers there; a union official said more picketing was planned for Monday.

"The fight has escalated" between the two sides, Palomino said, explaining that workers fear losing chunks of their pensions and benefits.

Temperatures were in the 90s Sunday and were expected to be in the high 80s and low 90s throughout the week.

Frank Allen is making sure the heat doesn't blow his power at home in upper Manhattan. "I turn off the air conditioner when I leave home," said Allen, 61, who was shopping in the Union Square neighborhood.

"It's not too good when the wires go out, and there's no one to fix them, Allen said. "The workers should get whatever they deserve ? just do it for us, Con Ed."

He has cats at home, but he's not worried leaving them without air conditioning. "They find their way to some cool corner."

And when he goes to work, heat is far from a problem: Allen works in a 33-degree space, in the refrigeration unit of the Fresh Direct food delivery company in Queens' Long Island City.

"In a heat wave, I wear long johns."

At an electronics and air conditioning retailer across the street from Con Ed, manager Ramon Nieves said there have been multiple power outages in recent years in his Queens neighborhood.

"I'm mad at Con Ed ? what are they thinking?" he said. "A lot of people could get sick in this heat."

He said his store sold about 35 percent more air conditioners this month than in the same, cooler period last year.

The extreme weather included vicious storms from Indiana to New Jersey and south to Virginia that left 17 people dead and 2.7 million without power. Most of the damage came in the mid-Atlantic region, and only scattered outages across Con Ed's service area in New York were reported as of Sunday. Con Ed said it is keeping a close watch on its system and has trained managers working on essential operations.

The 8,500 unionized workers told the company they'd be willing to work without a contract to keep the power company running, said John Melia, spokesman for Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America.

"We did everything to avert this action," he said. "We recognize that New York City is sweltering right now. ... We recognize we have a responsibility to the people of New York City and Westchester County," the suburban county north of the city.

He disputed the company's claim that its managers could do the job of the union workers.

"They know what happens in a heat wave, they know they don't have the expertise to fix it," he said. "They don't have the technical knowledge."

Con Ed said it had wanted a two-week extension of the current contract while negotiations continued, with assurance that the union would not strike without notice. The company said it offered such an extension, signing an agreement to that effect, but that the union didn't sign it. Con Ed said if the union agreed to the extension, employees would be welcomed back.

Negotiations lasted just over 10 days over a range of issues, including pensions, heath care and wages.

"This is very unfortunate. Both sides are very far part," Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin said.

Melia said the union negotiators were kicked out of the room in what he called a "union-busting tactic."

"This is not a labor issue," he said. "This is a corporate monopoly."

He said the two sides had been talking when the company demanded the union sign the contract extension, and that Con Ed locked workers out when the union said it preferred to keep talking and keep workers at the jobs without a contract in the interim.

Felix, Tarmoh to break tie in 100 on Monday

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Reluctantly, Jeneba Tarmoh will step into the blocks Monday to break a third-place tie she feels was already decided fair and square.

The young sprinter wants no part of a runoff with training partner Allyson Felix to settle the last spot for the London Games in the women's 100 meters.

The runoff ? a winner-take-all race ? will be held at 5 p.m. local time ? 8 p.m. EDT ? at Hayward Field. It's not something Tarmoh is looking forward to.

"In my heart of hearts, I just feel like I earned the third spot. I almost feel like I was kind of robbed," Tarmoh said.

Tarmoh was originally declared the third-place finisher of the event June 23, even going on a celebratory lap around the track, being presented a medal and then showing up at a news conference.

Only after her drug test did she discover the controversy. That race officials had declared a dead heat.

Now, after not making the team in the 200, Tarmoh has to regroup and step up to the starting line, trying to reclaim a spot she believed rightfully belongs to her.

"I'm not that excited at all. This decision was really hard for me to make," said Tarmoh, who's eligible to run on the Olympic 400 relay team. "I was pushed into a corner. They said if you don't make a decision, you give your spot up. I work too hard to just give my spot up. I had to say it was a runoff."

She's trying to make the best of a botched situation.

The controversy in the 100 overshadowed the entire trials simply because USA Track and Field had no protocol in place to deal with a dead heat. USATF officials quickly scrambled to adopt a tiebreaking procedure.

The athletes had a choice between a runoff or a coin flip. They chose to settle matters on the track, not with the flip of a quarter.

"They both feel they deserve a spot on the team and they're willing to do it in a competitive manner and a competitive fashion," USATF President Stephanie Hightower said. "I think it's good for the sport and it's good for them to show their level of competitiveness and passion and drive for what they've been working so hard to accomplish.

"The bottom line is that this is, in my opinion, the best way to be able to resolve this issue."

The resolution was delayed eight days because their coach, Bobby Kersee, wanted to wait to make a decision until after 200 on Saturday. Felix turned in a personal-best time of 21.69 seconds, the fourth-fastest by an American.

But it was lost in the controversy.

"I didn't get to really enjoy it," Felix said. "As soon as I came off (the track), that's the first time that I actually thought about the process. Of course, I wasn't thinking I wanted to do a coin toss, but that's the first time I sat down and went through things in my head.

"Once this is over, I'll be happy about it."

After two races and six rounds, both will be running with fatigued legs. So much so that Felix said she won't take any chances. If she steps into the blocks and doesn't feel right, that's it, she's pulling out of the competition. She won't risk her health with London so close.

"We're both not feeling our greatest," Felix said.

For Tarmoh, there's also an emotional component.

"I went to bed so happy and then I woke up to do something I don't want to do at all," Tarmoh said. "If it's in the best interest of someone's job or the sport, that's what I'll do."

Tarmoh's agent, Kim Holland was asked if there might be any sort of legal recourse, should Tarmoh not win the race.

"I'll have a sidebar conversation with Jeneba and see how she wants to proceed, meaning if it's really over with the run," Holland said.

Tarmoh indicated the matter would be concluded with the runoff.

"I wouldn't want to pursue anything else," she said. "This has been a long road already."

As for their friendship, Felix said it hasn't been affected by the situation. They both train under Kersee and were practicing starts together leading up to the 200.

"There's never any question about any of that," Felix said.

But plenty of questions about the parameters of the race. They don't know what lanes they will line up in or if they will be side-by-side. They will learn how this goes down on the fly ? just like this entire drama.

Since Felix had already earned a spot in the 200, there was speculation she might simply concede the 100 to Tarmoh. But Felix said the 100 is vital to her preparation for the 200, where she's a favorite to win Olympic gold.

"People may wonder, 'What in the world? Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (of Jamaica) ran 10.70 and you're nowhere close to that,'" Felix said. "But it's about making my 200 better and giving it my all."

The runoff a boon for track and will be shown on NBC in conjunction with the network's coverage of the swimming trials.

"This will reintroduce people to the sport and showcase world-class athletes and great competition," newly hired CEO Max Siegel said.

Color Your Business: Best Colors For Your Office, Products And Packaging

Profits in the red? Maybe you should paint your storefront or office walls blue.

Mike Kapnick, 41, wasn't worried about his company's profits when he painted the inside of his family business a few months ago, but he did give a lot of thought to what he wanted the interior environment to look like.

"While we wanted to maintain a business feel, we also wanted our employees to feel comfortable in the office," said Kapnick, president of Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Kapnick Insurance Group.

Kapnick wound up choosing slate blue, tan, a khaki and olive green mix and cream, and says of the look: "There is also an abundance of natural light in the building, so we felt the soothing outdoor colors would be a good fit. This combination has helped foster a team environment throughout the office, which is what we were looking for."

The idea that colors affect how customers shop, workers work and the general public behaves has been around for a while. Take a look at our color chart to get a sense of whether you're happy with your business's color palette.

    Blue and Green

What it's good for: A busy office environment. Studies show that people are more productive and confident in offices that are painted blue or have blue furniture -- any type of blue cues. For instance, a comprehensive, landmark study conducted by the University of British Columbia showed that a blue environment can help with productivity. What's more, blue has a calming effect on the public.

"Blue is calming, tranquil and soothing, like the ocean, which recedes away," said Chris Ring, vice president of operations and training for national franchise ProTect Painters (http://www.protectpainters.com/). "Because of that mentality, when we paint an accent wall, for instance, it feels calming and serene."

Green also is "a prevalent color in our natural environment," Ring said. "Think trees, grass -- those are the elements we've historically seen and been part of, and the color green is perceived in the same way, as a natural, calming color."

    Red

What it's good for: An office environment that requires a lot of attention to detail. The University of British Columbia study showed that the color red boosts performance when workers have detail-oriented tasks like proofreading or anything that requires memory retrieval. Red is also often used as an attention getter on packaging.

But red might not work for restaurants. A study conducted by University of Basel in Basel, Switzerland found that the color red acts like a subconscious stop sign, helping people limit their food intake.

    Black (and White)

What it's good for: Luxury businesses and high fashion companies. It's elegant and distinctive, perfect for luxury businesses (think jewelry) and some logos and branding, said Jack Taylor, professor of retail at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Ala.

Karen Mishra, assistant professor of business at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, said the brand Two Men and a Truck Intl. is one company that nicely uses black and white in their logo. "They enforce the use of their black and white brand logo on their trucks and other packaging with their franchisees because it is very distinctive and they want to maintain a consistent image around the country from franchise to franchise," Mishra said.

    Yellow and Orange

What it's good for: Office break rooms, restaurants and public bathrooms. "It's a cheery, energetic color," said Ring, who cautions not to go wild with yellow, especially if there's a lot of natural light that could make your yellow obnoxiously yellow. "It can cause some anxiety. For instance, if you go with a light yellow and then an accent wall that's purple, that can give an energetic feel to the room."

Ring offers a similar sentiment for orange. "Light shades of orange," he said, "can make people feel stimulated and happy. It's a playful color with a lot of warmth."

Yemen: Mines kill 81 in 2 weeks in embattled town

Yemeni military officials say landmines laid by al-Qaida fighters have killed eight people in the past three days near the former militant stronghold of Zinjibar in the country's south. This brings the total number of mine deaths since the town fell to a military offensive two weeks ago to 81.

The officials also said six bodies were found Saturday outside Zinjibar and five more inside a well on Friday. They say the identities of the 11 have not yet been established.

The officials say engineering teams have removed some 3,000 landmines from the area. They spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations.
